Nighttime at the harbour

Lei turned around to face Jing. “Yes I do.. There is no need for me to say that. I have always loved you and I always will.”

Jing grinned happily and hugged him tighter.

“But Jing.. it’s different now. My love for you has changed.”

San Cai stopped walking, surprised at what she is hearing. She moves back closer to hear more.

“What do you mean?” Jing removed herself from their hug and looked at Lei. “Don’t tell me.. If it is what I think it is.. then please don’t say it.. please..”

Lei looked at Jing in the eyes, “Jing.. You’re the one who knows me best. You should understand. You know what I’m going to say don’t you?”

Jing’s eyes slowly fill up with tears, “Why? Why does it have to be like this? Yes.. I know.. When I was on the plane.. I kept on reassuring myself that you would always love me and only me. But that’s not true anymore.. I was only lying to myself, trying to deny the truth..”

San Cai stopped crying. What did this mean? That Lei doesn’t like this.. Jing? She was confused, she didn’t know whether to be happy or sad.

“I’m sorry Jing,” said Lei quietly.

“If you don’t love me, there is only one other person.. San Cai. I know you well Lei, you don’t care about other people’s business. But I’ve seen how you care so deeply for San Cai, you’ve done so much for her. You wouldn’t do that to just anyone.. not even me.”

San Cai’s heart missed a beat. How was this possible? Did Lei love her?

Lei didn’t answer and looked down at the ground.

Jing smiled, “You’re still my shy little Lei. I’m guessing you haven’t told her right? If you don’t then you’ll regret it. You’ll be left thinking what would’ve happened if you did. That’s what I said to myself when I was coming back to Taipei. I only failed because you already love someone else. Does San Cai love someone else? You’re always doing what’s best for Ah Si but what about yourself? Did you ever think about your own happiness? Love is supposed to be selfish, you can’t push her to Ah Si just because Ah Si is your best friend and he loves her. If she loves you, then you’ll only make all three of you unhappy. Sometimes, you shouldn’t hide all your feelings. Not everyone understands you like I do. Remember what I said. I’m sorry.. didn’t mean to give you a lecture. But I have to go now.”

Lei looked up at Jing, “Aren’t you staying?”

“No, I’ve already got my answer. Goodbye Lei. You’ll see me again, don’t worry.”

“Thankyou Jing. Bye.” Lei said, as he watched Jing walk away into the night.

At the harbour, the following night (DMS and SC)

DMS POV:
* Will San Cai remember when we hugged here? After she lost her house and I rescued here. I hope she does and then I’ll take her to my house. Oh, here she comes. *

“Hi San Cai!” he greeted her warmly.

“I’m sorry, did you wait a long time?”

DMS POV:
*Oh.. she’s being so nice. Maybe I should try and not argue with her.. Be pleasant and make a good impression. I can see the meteor necklace, she’s still wearing it. Has she been wearing it all this time?*

“It’s ok. I’ll wait for you, no matter how long it takes.”

San Cai stopped. * What does he mean? Does he mean he’ll wait for me to remember? I hope he doesn’t. I’m already planning to stop dating with him.. as soon as Lei makes a move. If not then I’ll just wait for 2 weeks.. *

DMS started to talk and reminisced about the past. However San Cai was still thinking about the conversation she had heard between Lei and Jing.

“Who’s Jing?” she said to herself, unaware she had said it aloud.

“Jing?” DMS stared at her, “How do you know about Jing? I haven’t told you about her yet.”

“Huh? What did you say?”

DMS started to get angry. “Have you been listening to what I’m saying? CAN YOU STOP DREAMING AND CONCENTRATE? YOU STUPID WOMAN!” He paused to catch his breath. “Can’t even remember simple stuff like this.. wasting my time” he muttered to himself.

San Cai started to get angry herself, “Fine! If I’m wasting your precious time, then let’s break up! I don’t want to date you anymore, you stu.” She stopped.

* Flashback *

DMS hits San Cai. (because of Xiao Zi)

* End Flashback *

San Cai gasped. He had hit her so hard. Did he bring her here to remember that? He had such a bad temper.. always calling people names.

“What? You want to break up with me? No.. this wasn’t supposed to happen!” he yelled, unaware of her flashback.

“What? Why did you bring me here? To remember how you hit me?” San Cai shouted back.

“You..! Why did you have to remember that?” He pulled her into a hug, “NOW DO YOU REMEMBER?”

“No! I don’t. You can’t force me to remember specific memories! Can’t you just be patient?” asked San Cai softly, remembering how Lei had helped her remember. He had been kind and gentle to her. What a contrast to this loud and bad-tempered da shao ye!

“Fine. Fine.. I won’t force you. But please come with me to one more place? Please?” DMS put on his famous pout, the one that had managed to win her heart so many times in the past. The present San Cai didn’t fall for it.

“Stop being so childish!” was simply what she said.

“Please? I’m sorry San Cai.” That was it. Him, Dao Ming Si, pleading and asking for forgiveness.. so many times.. It had not been done before.

“I..” Then San Cai remembered what Mei Zuo had said before.

* Flashback *

Mei Zuo: Yeah.. he said you’re the most important person in his life. He changed becoz of you. He actually says “sorry” now.

San Cai: What do you mean? He doesn’t say ‘sorry’ when he does something wrong?

Lei: No.. he just says, “Did I ask for your opinion?” That was his favourite phrase.

* End Flashback *

San Cai, remembering this, accepted his apology. “Fine.. I’ll go with you.”

DMS grinned. He had finally succeeded.. Now for the second part of his plan. His first part had been ruined but the 2nd part was the most important. His home was his territory, nothing could go wrong for him there.

At DMS’s house

San Cai looked around at the huge mansion that DMS had taken her to. Could this possibly be a house? It was more like a hotel.

“San Cai, do you remember? You’ve been here many times before.”

“Wow.. is this really your house?” San Cai was amazed at the size and beauty of it.

DMS grinned, “Yeah. Once my mother bought your house and you had nowhere to go, so I brought you here. Yu Sao made you a maid and you had to work for me, if you wanted to live here. Do you remember?”

“No,” replied San Cai, she was still too busy looking at the hallways filled with doors, how could someone find their way around here?

“Doesn’t matter.” He looked at his watch. “It’s 12 am, perfect! Let’s go.” DMS took San Cai’s hand and together they walked up the stairs.

At the balcony

“Do you remember that we watched a meteor shower through a telescope here?” This was their best memory, he thought. If she remembered this, it would be much easier.

“No, but I feel like this place is.. Something special happened here right?” questioned San Cai.

“Yes. I gave you the meteor necklace here before, the one you’re wearing right now. I asked you to be my girlfriend. I couldn’t find another necklace this time, so I bought you this.” DMS handed San Cai a light blue box.

San Cai opened it to find a beautiful meteor ring covered in sparkling diamonds. She was wordless, unable to speak. “It’s beautiful..” Then as if waking from a dream, she closed the box abruptly. “I can’t accept it.” She handed the box back to DMS.

“Why? Just take it. It’s my gift to you.” DMS pushed the box back to her.

“No! It’s too expensive! I can’t have it!”

“San Cai! Stop being so difficult!” He grabbed her hand, “I’ll put it on for you.” He took the ring out of the box and slipped it gently onto her finger.

San Cai closed her eyes.

* Flashback *

DMS puts the meteor necklace onto San Cai’s neck.
They kiss.

San Cai opened her eyes, to find herself actually kissing DMS. ‘No no no.. this is wrong!’ she screamed in her head. But she was not resisting.. ‘The one I love is Lei! No.. what am I doing?’ She pushed DMS away and ran out of the house, tears streaming down. As she ran away, memories came rushing back to her.

* Flashback *

In the rain, San Cai said goodbye to DMS, turned around and walked away from him.

San Cai’s POV:
* What’s wrong with me? Do I love DMS? Why didn’t I stop the kiss? What about Lei? Why are all these memories coming back now? No no no.. this is confusing…. Argh.. gotta run away! *

San Cai ran down the street. Memories rushed into her head as she passed each familiar place. Running across the road, she was unaware of the car horns and the cars screeching around her. From far away she heard a voice, “Watch out!” She turned and saw a car rushing at her.

San Cai ran down the street. Memories rushed into her head as she passed each familiar place. Running across the road, she was unaware of the car horns and the cars screeching around her. From far away she heard a voice, “Watch out!” She turned and saw a car rushing at her.

* Flashback *

San Cai crosses the street while thinking about Dao Ming Si and the surprise. She doesn’t see a car speeding towards her.

Someone suddenly calls out: San Cai!

San Cai turns around in time to see, a car slamming into her. She falls down, unconscious, blood flowing from her head.

* End flashback *

Suddenly, an arm reaches out and pulls her back. The car screeches past the space where she once stood. San Cai took a deep breath, her heart pounding hard. “Thank you so much.” She turned around to look at her rescuer. “You saved my life.”

“Oh.. it was nothing. You should be more careful next time.”
San Cai smiled. “I will. My name’s San Cai. What’s yours?”

“My name is Ye Sha,” she replied.

DMS drove in his sports car around Taipei. Surely the car was faster than her legs. Where could she possibly be? What had he done? Why did he kiss her? Was that what had scared her? Why did she run away? Then he saw her, standing in the middle of the road with a car rushing at her. “SAN CAI!” he yelled. But she didn’t see or hear him. Then suddenly she was pulled back. He let out a sigh of relief. He quickly drove to where she had been pulled back, but she was gone.

In a pub

Ye Sha’s POV:
* So this is San Cai, the one that Ah Si loves so much. What is she like? She seems friendly and nice. Maybe that’s why.. she doesn’t seem beautiful or attractive. I should find out why he loves her so much. *

“Here, let me buy you a drink,” offered Ye Sha

“No, Ye Sha. You saved my life! I’ll treat you this time.”

“Thanks.” Ye Sha smiled, she decided that San Cai would make a very good friend.

“No need.” San Cai smiled back at her, “I should be the one to thank you.”

“Please stop thanking me. It makes me feel awkward, I don’t know how to reply to you!”

“Ok then.. sorry…”

They laughed. The drinks came.

“San Cai, you are so much fun and you are so nice!”

“Really?” San Cai blushed. “Well, you’re really beautiful. You must have a boyfriend!”

“Me?” Ye Sha hesitated. Should she tell San Cai or not? “I don’t have a boyfriend.”

“How can that be? You’re so beautiful.. someone must have pursued you before,” persisted San Cai.

“Well.. maybe one or two.” Ye Sha’s face darkened, “They only want me for my money, what would they know about love.. The only one I ever loved was too poor and low class for me.”

San Cai was shocked. “Is it really that bad?”

Ye Sha sighed, “Sometimes I really hate being rich. You’ve got no freedom.. There a strict rules about who society wants you to be. I really envy those who can make their own decisions..” Ye Sha laughed bitterly, “Even my marriage was arranged.”

San Cai smiled, “ ‘was’? Are you married?”

“Huh?” Oh no.. her secret was out. Stupid Ye Sha! She thought, “Um.. no.. I’m engaged, that’s all.”

“Really? I’m so happy for you. Congratulations.” San Cai hugged her new friend.

“What’s there to be happy about? He doesn’t even love me,” Ye Sha smiled sadly. “What did you expect? All of us rich people have arranged marriages. You’re really lucky you know San Cai?”

San Cai’s smile was instantly replaced with a frown, “I’m so sorry for you. Do you love him though?”

“Doesn’t matter.. My love is not returned,” Ye Sha took a sip of her drink and sighed again.

San Cai smiled, “Maybe it won’t be that bad. Who is this lucky man? What’s his name?”

“Err..” Ye Sha felt guilty, though she had only know San Cai for a short time, she had discovered that she was a really good friend. Should she tell her that it was DMS? “Ummm.. it’s a secret,” she finished lamely.

But San Cai wouldn’t give up, “Aww.. who is it? Tell me. What’s the big secret?”

“No..” Ye Sha felt bad, “I can’t.. I’m sorry.”

San Cai, seeing Ye Sha’s look of guilt and pain, finally stopped and smiled at her, “It’s okay. Don’t worry about it. We’re good friends right?”

Ye Sha looked at San Cai’s smiling face and grinned, “Sure.”

San Cai went home wearily. By the time she was in bed, it was 2:30am in the morning. She fell into bed, but still she couldn’t sleep. She had forgotten about her problems while with Ye Sha, but now.. they were back. San Cai knew she had to find the answers to her questions before she could rest. So Lei or DMS? Who did she love more? Lei had done so much for her after the accident.

* Flashback *

“If you don’t love me, there is only one other person.. San Cai. I know you well Lei, you don’t care about other people’s business. But I’ve seen how you care so deeply for San Cai, you’ve done so much for her. You wouldn’t do that to just anyone.. not even me.”

* End flashback *

She still remembered what Jing had said. What Lei had done for her was special. She hadn’t known that before because she didn’t remember. But now she knew. What about DMS? Now that she remembered everything.. she knew how much DMS had done for her also. San Cai also knew that DMS loved her deeply and that Lei possibly loved her. She wasn’t sure. Who should she choose?

Memories ran like a movie in her head, containing both Lei and DMS. Who should she choose? The question ran through her head again and again, until she finally fell wearily onto her bed and into a deep sleep.

The next morning, she woke up feeling refreshed. After a good sleep with good dreams, she had finally decided. Who should she choose? She knew who to choose. Suddenly her cell phone rang. “Hello?”

“Hello? It’s Lei.”

San Cai held the phone, her hand shaking. Now that she had finally decided, she didn’t want to question her own decision. “Yes? Why are you calling me so early? Don’t you have to sleep?”

“Sleep?” San Cai heard muffled laughter, had she heard him laugh before? It sounded pleasant. Then, “San Cai, it’s already 11am in the morning.”

“It is?” she glanced at her clock and quickly tried to correct her mistake, “Of course it is.. Anyway, why did you call me?”

“Meet me at the park in half an hour.” Then he hung up.
San Cai slowly put her phone down. Why did everybody like to talk in the park? Which park? But she knew, the one they had flown the kite in. She remembered that vividly, another sweet memory with Lei. She would tell him of her decision.

DMS glared at Ye Sha, “Why are you here? What if San Cai sees you here with me?” He looked around anxiously, no one was supposed to know about his fiancé.

“Am I really that bad? So bad that you didn’t even tell your friends about me?” Ye Sha gave one of her own deadly glares back to DMS.

“What? How did.. You aren’t even supposed to be here.”

“I’m not even supposed to be here? How can you say that? Don’t you remember your promise to me?” Ye Sha took out the recorder and played:

Ye Sha: “Can I go back to Taipei with you?”

DMS: “Hmmm..”

Ye Sha: “Is that a ‘yes’ then?”

DMS: “Yeah..”

“What? I never said that!” cried DMS.

“I have proof.” Ye Sha smiled but then laughed, “But.. I’ve decided to break the engagement with you.” She had laughed to cover up her pain, did he know it was fake? That this was all an act. It was all because of San Cai, it had only been a short friendship, but she didn’t want to ruin DMS and San Cai’s happiness.

“Really?” he was ecstatic, he had never imagined Ye Sha would say this to him. “Thankyou Ye Sha!” DMS hugged her.

“It’s ok.” Ye Sha’s eyes filled with tears. She had finally opened her heart and loved someone again, but she had to walk away.. again. She removed herself from his hug, afraid that she would be unable to put on her act any longer.

“Why are you crying?” DMS questioned.

“Because I’m so happy.” She laughed crazily, “Now I’m finally free.”

DMS grinned, he did not know this was an act, he didn’t know Ye Sha that well. “Good. I’m glad that you’re happy. Goodbye!” He walked away, happy and satisfied. He never looked back.

Ye Sha looked at the joyful expression on his face as he turned around and left her. She fell down on her knees and cried silently. Didn’t he know that she loved him? The pain that she was going through.. She had promised herself she would never love again, to save herself from the pain. But no.. she had given her newly mended heart.. just to be broken again.

Lei and San Cai strolled leisurely in the park together, in a comfortable silence.

Lei’s POV:

* Yes.. I’m going to tell her now. I’ve held back for so long and now.. I’m going to say it. Is she going to be happy? I know that she seems to be happy now, but inside.. I can see she is hiding some sort of confusion and pain.. Will I be able to free her from this? *

“I have something to tell you,” said Lei and San Cai at the same time. They smiled, “You go first,” they said again. Lei placed his hand over San Cai’s mouth, “Let me talk first. I’m afraid I won’t have the courage to say this again. I just want to say that I lo..”

San Cai took Lei’s hand from her mouth, “I’ve remembered everything,” she said, interrupting Lei’s speech.

Lei stopped and looked at her, with shock in his eyes. But it only lasted a second, before he turned and looked away. “When was this?”

“Yesterday, I..” San Cai turned to look at Lei, when she saw Ye Sha with DMS. Why were they together how did Ye Sha know DMS? “Is that Dao Ming Si?”

Lei turned to look in the direction that she was pointing at and saw DMS standing next to a girl, seemingly arguing.

DMS: Why are you here? What if San Cai sees you here with me? (looked around)

Ye Sha: Am I really that bad? So bad that you didn’t even tell your friends about me? (glares back to DMS)

DMS: What? How did.. You aren’t even supposed to be here.

Ye Sha: I’m not even supposed to be here? How can you say that? Don’t you remember your promise to me? (took out the recorder and played)

Ye Sha: “Can I go back to Taipei with you?”
DMS: “Hmmm..”
Ye Sha: “Is that a ‘yes’ then?”
DMS: “Yeah..”

DMS: What? I never said that!

Ye Sha: I have proof. (laughed) But.. I’ve decided to break the engagement with you.

San Cai gasped, shocked at what she is hearing. DMS and Ye Sha engaged? That’s why Ye Sha didn’t want to tell her..

DMS: Really? Thankyou Ye Sha! (hugs Ye Sha)

Ye Sha: “It’s ok.” (eyes fill with tears)

They stopped hugging

DMS: Why are you crying?

Ye Sha: Because I’m so happy. (laughs crazily) Now I’m finally free.

DMS (grins): Good. I’m glad that you’re happy. Goodbye! (walks away)

Ye Sha fell down on her knees and cried silently.

San Cai watched, her face filled with surprise, anger and sympathy for her friend. Because she saw that Ye Sha truly loved DMS. Did Ye Sha break the engagement because of her, San Cai? She turned back to Lei, who was looking at her. “Did you know about this? The engagement, I mean.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?!” shouted San Cai.

“I was going to, but you interrupted me,” Lei replied softly.

“I.. Ye Sha’s my friend, why didn’t she tell me?” she asked herself softly. “She probably knew about me and DMS.. Poor Ye Sha.. I can’t have DMS, that would be wrong of me.. she saved my life,” muttered San Cai softly to herself.

Lei caught her last few words, “She saved your life?”

“Yeah.. yesterday. If it weren’t for her..” San Cai shuddered, “I would’ve had a car accident again.”

“What happened?” Lei asked in an anxious voice.

“Oh.. it was nothing. I’m fine now..” What should she do now? She had originally made up her mind to choose Dao Ming Si. But now, with Ye Sha.. she was not so sure. How could she hurt Ye Sha like that? Ye Sha had saved her life.. What to do? Should she go wif Lei then? “Um.. I need to go home and think about this..”

“I’ll go with you.”

“No..” San Cai shook her head, “I need to talk to Ye Sha first.”

“Ok then.” Lei turned around and slowly walked away.

San Cai watched Lei’s fading back and turned back to Ye Sha. But she was gone.

Ye Sha sighed as she finished another glass of wine. She called the bartender, “Another one. Quickly!”

As the bartender set down the drink, he looked at her carefully. “Are you sure you’re okay? Do you want me to call a cab for you or something? That’s your 11th glass..”

“No.” Ye Sha shook her head and laughed crazily as she finished the wine in one gulp. “Get me another.”

The bartender walked reluctantly away to get the drink for her.

San Cai sighed as she closed her cell phone, after calling Ye Sha for the 20th time that afternoon. She had seen how depressed Ye Sha was after DMS’s departure and she was worried about her. After all.. who knows what she might do? She sighed again and looked around her. There was a pub next to her. Who knows? When people are down, they go to drink, hoping to drown their sorrows.. San Cai was tired, she was glad of an excuse to sit down and besides, she might find Ye Sha here. She walked in wearily and saw Ye Sha lying on the table, a half-filled glass in front of her. San Cai’s face lighted up, finally! She had found Ye Sha. She walked slowly over to her.

“Ye Sha?”

“Mmmm?” Ye Sha sat up and looked at San Cai. Then she collapsed.

The sun shone through the window and lighted up the soft features of Hua Ze Lei’s face. His eyes flickered open and he stared at the ceiling in deep thought. In his mind, he thought about what had happened yesterday.

* Flashback *

Lei placed his hand over San Cai’s mouth, “Let me talk first. I’m afraid I won’t have the courage to say this again. I just want to say that I..”

San Cai took Lei’s hand from her mouth, “I’ve remembered everything,” she said, interrupting Lei’s speech.

* End flashback *

‘I’ve remembered everything.’ Her words repeated themselves over and over again in his head. He sat up in his bed and looked at the clock. 7:00. His eyes widened in shock, why was he up so early? ‘I’ve remembered everything.’ The words revolved around his head. He sighed. He knew the reason for waking up early today. It was because of San Cai. Now that she had remembered everything.. did she still love him? ‘But she remembered everything,’ he told himself. She remembered how she used to love Ah Si. He sighed again. Why was he always so late in making decisions? Ah Si always went first, brave, telling San Cai how he felt about her. Defending her openly. How he (HZL) had envied him (DMS). He could never do that- always the quiet Lei. Now it was too late, his chance had slipped away. ‘I’ve remembered everything.’ Yes.. it was too late, San Cai has remembered everything.

Ye Sha woke and fell out of bed. She held her head in pain. “Where am I?” she managed to whisper.

San Cai woke up from her slumber and rushed to Ye Sha’s side. “Ye Sha?”

With the help of San Cai, Ye Sha slowly stood up and looked around her. “San Cai?”

San Cai slowly helped Ye Sha to a chair, “This is my room. I brought you here yesterday when you were drunk,” she explained. “I don’t know where you live.”

Ye Sha shook her head to clear out the confusion. Drunk? Then she remembered. Ah Si had left her. She closed her eyes in pain, remembering. Ah Si’s joy when she told him that she had broken the engagement.

San Cai watched the passing expressions on Ye Sha’s face. “Ye Sha,” she said slowly, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Ye Sha’s eyes opened, “Tell you what?” she asked, as she turned to look at San Cai’s face.

“Who your fiancé is.” San Cai said softly.

Ye Sha was surprised, “You know?”

“Yes.. I do.”

DMS sat happily in the pub with his two friends. Ximen peered suspiciously at his face.

“Why didn’t you tell us about your fiancé?” Mei Zuo demanded.

Ah Si’s smile faded slowly, “You never asked me.” He replied simply, before the grin returned to his face.

“But you promised! All of us did. The rest of us have to know if you’re getting married!” cried Ximen.

“Hey! Keep your voice down!” Ah Si’s grin grew wider, “I’m not engaged.”

Mei Zuo stared at him, “But Ye Sha said…”

A look of anger replaced the grin on his face, “What did that woman say?”

“She said that you were engaged and..” Ximen stopped. “Is there something you’re not telling us?”

Ah Si smiled again, “She broke the engagement. She said that she never loved me anyway and she would like to get her freedom back.”

Mei Zuo broke his stare and took a sip of his drink, “I can’t believe this..”

“What do you mean?” Ah Si questioned, “She was really happy! She laughed and everything!” He tried to defend himself from the doubt that was clearly written over his friend’s faces.

Ximen laughed, “How stupid can you get? She loves you! But why would she break the engagement?”

“Because of San Cai.”

All three heads turned towards the owner of the voice.

“When did you come?” Mei Zuo stared at Lei with an exaggerated angry expression, “Stop walking without any sound!”

Lei smiled as he walked over to his seat beside Ximen. But DMS stood up and held his arm. “What did you say? About San Cai?”

Lei turned to look at Ah Si, “Ye Sha saved San Cai’s life.”

Ye Sha sat down slowly. She shook her head again.

“Are you okay?” asked San Cai anxiously.

“Yeah.. I’m alright.”

She was not convinced, “Ye Sha! You fainted!”

Ye Sha laughed, “I’m a bit prone to fainting. Besides, you shocked me when you told me you knew about my engagment.”

San Cai smiled but she said in a serious tone, “I saw you in the park.”

Ye Sha stopped smiling, “You saw me?!”

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t following you or anything. I was with my friend, Lei.” San Cai quickly apologized.

“So I guess you saw my ugly face when I was crying?” Ye Sha joked.

“Ye Sha. Why did you do that?" San Cai looked at Ye Sha closely, "I know you love Ah Si. Why did you give up?”

Ye Sha laughed again, “Because the one he loves isn’t me, it’s you.”

“But..” San Cai stopped.

Ye Sha smiled at San Cai, waiting for her response. “Mei Zuo and Ximen have already told me. You and Ah Si share something so special. You’ve been through so much, and yet you can still be together. You shouldn’t give up on that San Cai.”

* San Cai’s flashback *

DMS: Why do we have to give up? If I could, at the first time we decided to break up, I would have given up. Now, I'll never think about it, we will be together in the end.

Tears ran down San Cai’s cheeks as the memories ran through her head. ‘You and Ah Si share something so special.’ Ye Sha was right. San Cai turned to her friend, “But Ye Sha, what about you? You love Ah Si don’t you? Then why are YOU giving up?”

Ye Sha smiled sadly, “No matter how hard I try, I cannot make him love me. The only person in his heart, is you..”

San Cai thought about Ye Sha’s words as she remembered how DMS had suffered when she had been kidnapped. He was beaten so badly just because he didn’t want her to get hurt.

DMS: At that time, in my heart there was only one thought, that was to protect you. If I die, don't be sad and don't cry.

He shook his head to clear out his thoughts and continued swimming. It had always been like this. Whenever he was troubled, he would swim. Swim until he was tired. Too tired to think. He hardly remembered what had happened last night with the rest of F4. He had tuned the whole thing out after he heard what Lei said.

DMS: What did you say? About San Cai?

Lei: Ye Sha saved San Cai’s life.

DMS: What?!

Lei: San Cai was about to have another car accident and Ye Sha saved her.

DMS: Another car crash? When was this?

Lei: I don’t know. She never said.

What should he do? DMS sighed and swam some more. Love is so complicated. He slowly walked out of the pool. Yes, he would go to San Cai and tell her their engagement was over. Then San Cai would surely return to his side? Well.. she did kiss him that night. But what did that mean? No, he reassured himself, San Cai loves me and only me and I will make her remember that.

Dao Ming Feng paced in the room. “WHERE IS AH SI?” she said loudly.

“In the shower, fu ren. Do you want me to call him?”

“Yes! Why is he taking so long? I have something very important to discuss with him!” DMF glared at the maid in front of her. “GET AH SI RIGHT NOW!” she yelled. The maid nodded and fled out the door.

DMF looked away and out the window.

“What are you doing here?”

She turned around immediately to find DMS in front of her.

She stared at him, anger burning in her eyes. “WHAT DID YOU DO?” she demanded angrily.

DMS stared back at her, his own temper flaring up.

DMF took a breath to calm herself, “Why did you break the engagement?”

“I didn’t.”

“Yes you did. Why can’t you just accept Ye Sha? San Cai is nothing but a poor filthy girl, why would you like her? Ye Sha is much better. Don’t tell me you have no feelings for her. I know you do. You like Ye Sha, I know it! You can’t hide from the truth forever!” her voice softened, “You are my only son, I only want what’s best for you.”

“Ye Sha was the one who broke the engagement!”

“Stop being so stubborn. I will not let you break this engagement. I have already gone through a whole list of suitable girls for you and Ye Sha is the best one! Why did you have to reject her? You promised me before you came back to Taipei! Do you not remember our deal?” DMF questioned him angrily.

Yes. Yes of course he remembered.

DMF: But you haven’t married Ye Sha. It’s not okay. Fine. I will make a deal with you.

Ah Si: What deal?

DMF: 1 month from now you can return to Taipei. Within this month, you have to date Ye Sha and make her happy. Do you understand?

Ah Si:…

DMF: 2 months from now. You have to marry Ye Sha. The one month in Taipei, you can see San Cai, if you want.

Ah Si: So in the end, I still have to marry Ye Sha… So what’s the point?

DMF: If you do not agree to this. Then you will not see San Cai at all and marry Ye Sha after one month here in New York.

Ah Si: Do I have another choice?

DMF: You have 2 choices. #1. Agree to what I said and marry Ye Sha after 2 months. You will get to see San Cai. #2. If you don’t agree, then you will marry Ye Sha after 1 month and you will not see San Cai at all.

“Yes,” he answered slowly, “I remember.”

DMF smiled, “Good. I will not permit you to marry San Cai. You know that. Ye Sha is the best choice. I have a business meeting this afternoon and I have to leave for New York. You only have 1 week left! When you come back to New York, you will marry Ye Sha.” She turned and walked out of the room.

DMS sighed and collapsed into a sofa. Why did his mother have to get in the way of him and San Cai? What did money and status matter when it came to love? But did San Cai love him? His eyes burned as they stared at the wall in front of him. Yes, he would have to confront her once and for all. He didn’t have much time left..

Mei Zuo sat down and sighed. He looked around at all the pretty girls surrounding him. Too bad he had made a bet with Ximen. He never would have guessed that Ximen could have held out for so long. It had already been 3 weeks and it was still Xiao You.
‘Guess he really does love her,’ Mei Zuo thought to himself. Now Ximen was off with Xiao You, Ah Si was with San Cai and Lei.. He sighed again, he was bored. There was nothing to do- no friends to hang out with and no girls to flirt with.

“YO! MEI ZUO!” a voice called from behind him.

Mei Zuo turned around immediately to find Ximen holding hands with Xiao You. He smiled,

“HEY!” he shouted back over the loud music. Ximen grinned as he led Xiao You over towards his table.

San Cai stared out of her window, looking at the meteor lights that DMS had hung up for her. He had done so much for her. DMS, her true love. But what about Lei? Did she love him too? She sighed softly. And Ye Sha. She was so heartbroken when DMS left her. San Cai stood up and walked slowly out the door. ‘Maybe a walk will help,’ she thought and she walked out of her front door to find..

Ye Sha sat in the park staring at the happy couples walking by. How she wished that she could be just like them. Why was it, that every time she fell in love..
‘You’re doomed forever,’ she told herself. As she watched another boy and girl walk past hand in hand, fresh tears rolled down her cheeks. Why couldn’t Ah Si love her? Because of San Cai. She had encouraged San Cai to be with Ah Si, she had tried to be unselfish. But why was she feeling so bad? Her heart had been shattered when he left her.
Ye Sha covered her face with her hands and sobbed. It was so painful, a deep would in her heart. She felt as if someone had come along and stabbed her in the heart, and left her to suffer. She cried silently, thinking of the few dates she had been on with DMS.

* Flashback *

DMS (sigh): Where do you want to go?

Ye Sha: I don’t know. Where do you wanna go?

DMS: Can’t you just decide? Are you stupid?

Ye Sha: Well, can’t you decide? Are YOU stupid?

DMS: Stop repeating what I say! Stupid woman.

Ye Sha: Look who’s calling me stupid.. (smiles) stupid pighead.

Ye Sha: Ok.. You’re going back to Taipei tomorrow aren’t you? (takes out a small voice recorder) Can I go back to Taipei with you?

DMS: Hmmm..

Ye Sha (smiles): Is that a ‘yes’ then?

DMS: Yeah..

Ye Sha (puts the recorder away): DAO MING SI!

DMS: Huh? What?

Ye Sha laughs.

DMS: You stupid woman!

Ye Sha: Let’s go on the rollercoaster.

DMS: But there are big drops and stuff..

Ye Sha (laughs): You’re not scared are you?

DMS: Who’s scared? I was just worried about you..

Ye Sha smiled as she remembered how DMS had thrown up after the ride. He was so naïve, like a child with simple arrogance. He thought he was the best, the greatest. But she also found that he could also be understanding..

* Flashback *

Ye Sha: You could at least try liking me you know. I’m not that keen on marrying you either, so stop acting like you’re the one who was forced into this. I’m not that bad am I? You make it seem like absolute torture being with me. I had someone I love too you know.

DMS (looks strangely at YS): Had? Why aren’t you with him anymore?

Ye Sha (sighs): It’s a long story.. But I can’t be with him anyway.

DMS: Because of your family?

Ye Sha nodded.

DMS: Where is he now?

Ye Sha (sobs): In heaven.

DMS: I’m sorry. But I guess you’re better than Xiao Zi.

Ye Sha: Who’s that?

DMS: My ex-fiancé. At least you understand what it’s like to be in love with someone. Do you miss him?

Ye Sha: Just like you miss San Cai, only more.

DMS: You must feel terrible and here I was thinking..

Ye Sha: It’s okay, I know you love that San Cai a lot and I know I can never replace her in your heart.

How true that was. She could never replace San Cai in Ah Si’s heart. Ye Sha sighed, it was painful to think of their memories as new tears rolled down her face.

Lei walked slowly around the park, reminiscing his memories with San Cai there. He could still remember them flying the kite.
He sighed, if only he hadn’t let go of her that time, hadn’t given her back to Ah Si. He should have taken the chance when San Cai still loved him, now it was all too late. Too late.
Sadness filled him as he walked along, looking at the scenery as he went past.

Suddenly he stopped. He caught sight of a familiar figure huddled underneath a tree.

San Cai slowly opened the door and to her surprise, DMS was standing there in front of her. She forced a smile onto her face, “Err… Hi? Um.. do you want to come in?” she mumbled.

San Cai stood in the kitchen and peeked out the door. DMS was sitting at the table. Her mind was in turmoil. She hadn't expected to see him so soon. "Stupid San Cai!" she yelled silently, "Why did you invite him inside the house?"

She quickly poured a glass of water for him, hoping he wasn't suspicious of her taking so long. She sighed, what other excuses could she make to stall time?
San Cai slowly walked outside with a glass of water in her hand. She set the glass down the table and quickly said, "Er.. do you want something to eat? I'll go and get it for you." She hurried towards the kitchen, her only sanctuary.

But suddenly he grabbed her hand, "San Cai, are you avoiding me? I need to talk to you."

Her heart thumped loudly. It was wonder that DMS didn't hear it. "What do I do now?" she asked herself. She felt like screaming but she couldn't. So she turned around.
"What do you want to talk about?" She looked up to his face, desperation was written all over it.

DMS pulled her into a hug, "I know you might think I'm crazy. But I have to say this. I love you so much San Cai. You probably already know about the engagement, but it's not what you think it is." He looked at San Cai's face, searching for some sign of understanding. But he saw none, so he continued, desperately trying to explain himself, "There's nothing between me and Ye Sha. I don't love her and she doesn't love me. The engagement.."
He was about to say it was over, but his mother's words came back to him.

* Flashback *

"I will not permit you to marry San Cai. You know that. Ye Sha is the best choice. I have a business meeting this afternoon and I have to leave for New York. You only have 1 week left! When you come back to New York, you will marry Ye Sha."

Her words rang in his head, 'You will marry Ye Sha. You will marry Ye Sha.'

DMS turned his attention back to San Cai, "Anyway, it's not what you think it is! I don't love Ye Sha! Ye Sha doesn't love me! It's wrong."

"No.." San Cai shook her head slowly as tears threatened to spill, "No. You're wrong." Tears glistened in her eyes.

DMS stared at San Cai, "What do you mean? Did Ye Sha say something to you? No.. My mother?! WHAT DID MY MOTHER SAY TO YOU? Stupid old woman!" He shouted angrily.

"DAO MING SI! She never said anything to me!" shouted San Cai as tears ran down her cheeks, "Maybe we're just not meant to be together."

"No! WHY? We¡¯ve gone through so much! ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE ALL THAT UP?" DMS shouted as he shook her.

"I'm sorry.." San Cai broke free of his grip and walked away to her room.

Tears streamed down her face, "I'm sorry." She whispered softly.

DMS stared after her as the door slammed in his face. "San Cai.."

Ye Sha sobbed unceasingly as the painful memories played through her head. Suddenly she was aware of a presence beside her. 'Who could it be?' she asked herself, 'Ah Si?' Her hopes went high as she lifted her head to find someone doing a handstand beside her.

"What are you doing?" she asked him.

"µ±ÄãÑÛÀáÈ̲»×¡ÒªÁ÷³öÀ´µÄʱºò£¬Èç¹ûÄܹ»µ¹Á¢ÆðÀ´£¬ÕâÑùÔ­±¾ÒªÁ÷³öÀ´µÄÑÛÀá¾ÍÁ÷²»³öÀ´ÁË£¬Äãѧ»áÁËÂð?"

" When your tears wants to flow, if you do a handstand, your tears will not flow out, do you know now?"

" But won't your head hurt after a while?" Ye Sha questioned him. She was intrigued by this mysterious person, suddenly coming up to her and telling her to do a handstand.

He didn't reply but came down from his handstand and sat down beside her on the grass.

Ye Sha looked at him curiously but his face revealed nothing about what he was thinking. It was expressionless. "Who are you?" she questioned him.

He looked at her and replied softly, "Hua Ze Lei."

"Hua Ze Lei?" she repeated, but afraid she might sound rude, she quickly introduced herself, "I'm Ye Sha." She held out her hand for him to shake it. But he ignored her. After a while she put her hand back down.

"Um.. so who are you?" she asked again.

A faint smile appeared on his face, "I'm Ah Si's best friend."

"Oh." She stopped, that name again. God the world was small. Then she remembered vaguely about Mei .­. Mei.. Mei Something, telling her about F4. F4. This must be the fourth member, she told herself. What was it again? Oh yes, Flower Four. She smiled, what a girlish name for a group of males. "Nice to meet you."

Ximen sat across the table and looked at his girlfriend, Xiao You. Her face was pretty and simple. Very plain compared to his other girlfriends, but she had an innocence that none of the others had. Those girls threw themselves at him, only because he was rich and handsome. But Xiao You was different. She liked him for who he was and he liked that. He continued to stare at her face, admiring her features.

Xiao You looked up from the menu and saw Ximen gazing dreamily in her direction. She smiled and stared back at him. "Ximen!"

He broke off from his trance and smiled back at her. "Xiao You!"

Xiao You giggled and asked, "Why were you staring at me like that? So weird!"

Ximen grinned, "Because you're so pretty."

"Really?" she blushed, "But I'm not as pretty as your other girlfriends."

"Nah.. you're just.." He hesitated, trying to think of a word, "different." he finished.

"Different?" the smile went off Xiao You's face, "What do you mean?"

"Er.." he stopped. For once, he didn't know what to say to a girl. All his previous girlfriends had just been play, he was used to praising and flattering them. But with Xiao You it was different. Yes.. different. "You're not the same as the others. You're just.." he struggled to find a better word, "different." 'Stupid Ximen!' he shouted at himself, 'Why are you saying that again?'

Xiao You giggled, "What do you mean by "different"?"

"Err.. I mean you're better. Yeah you're better than those cheap meimei's!" He grinned, proud of himself for thinking of a good word.

"Ok. Let's order now," said Xiao You cheerfully.

Xiao You fell down onto her bed with a big grin on her face. Another successful date with Ximen. She really enjoyed the time they spent together. But did Ximen? Was this stuff boring him? She knew that he was used to being a playboy and she saw how hard he tried. She appreciated it a lot but how long would it last? No no no.. she told herself, no good thinking negative thoughts. He has said she was different, better than his other girlfriends. She smiled again and happily she fell asleep.

San Cai laid down onto her bed and cried non- stop. She had heard him leave a few minutes ago and now, she could not hold her tears anymore.
Now that she remembered everything, it was painful to let go of DMS. She remembered everything they went through together. She remembered how he told her over and over again how he loved her, remembered how many things he’d done for her.
How his love surrounded her with warmth and happiness. She missed his smile, his childish attitude, his stupid sayings and most of all, his love.
Tears poured out as she tried to release the sorrow that filled her.

As San Cai remembered, she tried to do a handstand. But soon her hands got tired and the tears started again. ‘Why am I crying?’ she asked herself.
A few days ago, this would have meant nothing to her. But now that her memories were back.. “Memories are so painful,” she said softly to herself.

Mei Zuo glanced uneasily at his best friend. He had been sitting there for half an hour, drinking glass after glass of alcoholic drinks. He tried to stop him, but it was useless. DMS was stubborn and nobody could stop him. Now that Ximen had gone off with Xiao You, there was no one to help him with Ah Si.
“If only Lei was here,” he sighed as he looked again at Ah Si.

“I am here,” a voice behind him said.

Mei Zuo spun around immediately to find Lei standing in front of him. He grinned, “Finally someone here to help me!” Then he noticed another figure standing behind Lei. “San Cai? Is that you?”

Ye Sha stepped out from Lei’s shadow, “It’s me.” She smiled and then she saw DMS drinking. Her heart broke at the sight.

Mei Zuo followed her gaze and saw she was looking at DMS. “Yeah.. he’s a mess isn’t he? Ever since he called me to come out and have a drink with him, he’s been drinking and drinking. And look at him now. I couldn’t stop him,” he explained.

Lei nodded and looked at Ah Si. Was this something to do with San Cai? Yes, of course, he thought silently to himself. Only San Cai could have such an impact on him. But why? He remembered that San Cai had told him that she had remembered everything. Wouldn’t that mean Ah Si and San Cai would be together?
‘Must be that San Cai is feeling guilty,’ he said to himself as his gaze shifted to Ye Sha. He knew that Ye Sha loved Ah Si a lot, he had seen her crying, her sadness. He didn’t know what had made him go up to her and teach her the handstand. He normally didn’t care about other people’s business. But maybe he had changed, he smiled, all because of San Cai. Then he slipped into thoughts of San Cai and his memories of her.

Ye Sha was staring at DMS with a sad expression on her face. ‘Why are you doing this to yourself Ah Si? Do you know how heartbroken I feel, seeing you like this?’ she thought herself. What did you do to him San Cai? I returned him to you and you.. She looked again at DMS as tears started to fill her eyes.
“What are you doing, Ah Si?” she whispered softly. She placed her hand gently on his and held it tightly, “Ah Si.”

DMS opened his eyes and grinned. “San Cai! I’ve been waiting for you. I knew you would come!” He laughed crazily and fell down on top of Ye Sha. “San Cai..” he slurred and he hugged Ye Sha.

Tears flowed from her eyes as she watched Ah Si’s actions in pain. Mei Zuo pulled him back, “Ah Si!”

Ye Sha stood up to leave, knowing that in DMS’s heart, there was only San Cai.

“NO!” DMS shouted as he grabbed Ye Sha’s hand, “San Cai! Don’t leave me!”

Mei Zuo once again pulled him and shouted back at him, “This isn’t San Cai! It’s Ye Sha!”

“No no no..” DMS mumbled to himself, “San Cai.. don’t leave me.”

San Cai stared at her tear-stained face in the mirror. ‘You’re so ugly,’ she told herself, ‘Why do people still like you?’
She splashed cold water on her face when she heard someone ring her bell. ‘Oh no..’ she said to herself silently, ‘Is he back again?’

She walked slowly up to the big wooden door that separated her from the “person” who was outside. She paused in front of it. ‘Should I open it? Is it DMS again? I can’t face him..’ she thought. But the bell kept on ringing continuously so she opened to door to find…

Mei Zuo, with the help of Lei, heaved DMS onto his bed.

“Phew!” Mei Zuo breathed a sigh of relief as he collapsed into the chair beside DMS’s bed, “You sure are heavy!” he said. He turned to speak to Lei but found he was already gone.

Ye Sha stood in front of San Cai, staring angrily at her. “What did you do to Ah Si?” she said in a cold and icy voice.

San Cai looked at Ye Sha in surprise, “What.. What about Dao Ming Si?”

Ye Sha exploded, “I GAVE HIM TO YOU AND THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT HIM? DID YOU KNOW WHAT HE WAS LIKE AT THE PUB? HE WAS A TOTAL WRECK!!”

San Cai gasped, “I’m sorry… I just..” she looked at Ye Sha who was glowering at her, tears filled her eyes again. Why was everyone angry at her? Did everyone hate her? No.. not everyone. There’s still Lei. SHUT UP! She told herself angrily, this is no time to think about that. “I’m sorry Ye Sha. I was only doing it for you.” She said softly.

“FOR ME? I don’t need your pity! I don’t want you to give him to me just because you feel guilty. This is so low! There should be fair competition. I don’t want you to just GIVE him to me. If I have him, I want him to truly love me. If he can’t love me then I don’t want him. Don’t you see? I tried so hard to be unselfish. Let you to be happy together and now YOU DO THIS TO HIM!!” shouted Ye Sha angrily.

“Why is everything I do wrong?” Tears rolled down San Cai’s cheeks, “I’m sorry everybody. I hurt Lei, Dao Ming Si and now you.”

Ye Sha, seeing San Cai’s tears, “I’m so sorry San Cai. You’re my good friend. I shouldn’t have lost control like that.” She hugged her, “Friends forever right?”

“I know you love Dao Ming Si, you shouldn’t give up. Like you said, fair competition!” San Cai smiled.

“Of course!”
