Davies, Roger
b. c. 1978
Ravenclaw 1990s, Q. captain/Chaser (OP30).
Roger Davies is a popular, athletic Ravenclaw student a year or
two older than Harry. Roger went with Fleur Delacour to the Yule
Ball; he appeared to be so besotted with her that he could barely
think. He missed his mouth with his fork when he tried to eat
and babbled stupidly in response to what she said. Later, he and
Fleur spent some romantic time in the rose garden outside (GF22,
23). Roger asked out Cho Chang in early February 1996, but she
turned him down; Cho used the incident to try to make Harry jealous
as they sat in Madam Puddifoot's with Roger and his current girlfriend
sitting at an adjacent table, kissing and cuddling (OP25, 30,
31).
Davis, Tracey
Slytherin 1991 - 1998
Tracey Davis is mentioned in HPM.
Dawlish
Auror, very capable and self-assured. He left Hogwarts with Outstandings
in all his NEWTs. He accompanied Fudge to Hogwarts to confront
Harry about his secret DA meetings. Dawlish was knocked out along
with Kinglsey, Umbridge, and Fudge when Dumbledore, who had taken
the blame on himself, escaped. Dawlish is described as a "tough-looking
wizard with very short wiry hair"; his hair is gray. (OP27)
A few weeks later, Dawlish was one of the wizards attempting to
arrest Hagrid (OP31). Dawlish arrived at the Atrium of the Ministry
of Magic with Fudge after the Battle of June, 1996, was over.
Fudge sent him to the Department of Mysteries to attend to the
captured Death Eaters (OP
The name Dawlish almost certainly came from the name of a seacoast
town in Devon. It is located near Exeter, where JKR attended university.
Dearborn, Caradoc
Member of the original Order of the Phoenix; missing and presumed
dead (OP9).
Caradoc was a British Celtic Prince (usually Latinised to to Caractacus)
who led a rebellion against Roman rule. (Thanks to Ross Gillson)
Death Eaters
The followers of Lord Voldemort are called Death Eaters. They
swear their lives and their service to the Dark Lord. He then
places his mark on their left forearm. This mark, in the shape
of a skull with a serpent crawling from it, burns hot when Voldemort
wishes to summon the Death Eaters. They then Apparate to him (GF).
See detailed entry for complete list of known Death Eaters, past
and present. Death Eaters are noted in the Lexicon with skull
icon.
Delacour, Fleur
b. c. 1977
Beauxbatons
(See also specific entry for details.) Fleur is a very beautiful
girl who attended Beauxbatons Academy. She is part Veela and was
the Beauxbatons champion in the Triwizard Tournament (GF16). Fleur
is a bit haughty and dismissive, criticizing Hogwarts for everything
from its food to its decorations. The boys find her extremely
attractive, but the girls--particularly Hermione--are a bit less
than taken with her. Fleur is last known to be living and working
at Gringotts in London, and to be dating Bill Weasley (OP4).
"Fleur Delacour" means "flower of the court,"
according to JKR. (AOL)
Delacour, Gabrielle
Fleur's younger sister. Harry thought at the time of the 2nd task
that Gabrielle looked no more than eight. She served as hostage
for her sister in the Second Task (GF26).
Gabrielle - feminine form of Gabriel (Hebrew, 'God is my strength');
archangel particularly noted as a messenger who heralds and helps
interpret dreams and visions. Of the angels associated with the
four elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), Gabriel is associated
with water. This seems apt, given the nature of the Second Task.
-- MLW
Delaney-Podmore, Sir Patrick
See entry for his ghost, currently the leader of the Headless
Hunt (CS). Since only wizards can become ghosts (OP38), we know
that Delaney-Podmore was a wizard in life.
It has been pointed out by several people, including MLW, that
there is a certain similarity of surnames between that of this
ghost and Sturgis Podmore. We have no hard evidence regarding
any possible connection between the two other than the coincidence
of name, so far.
-- MLW
de Montmorency, Laverne
1823 - 1893
Inventor of many love potions.
Derek
b. 1982 (PA11)

Derwent has long silver ringlets. Her portraits hang in both Dumbledore's
office and the main admitting area for St. Mungo's (OP22).
Deverill, Philbert
Manager of Puddlemere United (DP)
Diggle, Dedalus
A member of the Order of the Phoenix in both the first and second
wars against Voldemort (OP), this wizard was in the Leaky Cauldron
when Hagrid brought Harry in on July 31, 1991. Diggle once bowed
to Harry in a shop (SS5), much to Aunt Petunia's horror. He lives
in Kent and, according to McGonangall, has never had any sense
(SS1).
Daedalus (Greek mythology) - the legendary inventor who designed
the labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur. When Minos then imprisoned
him on Crete, Daedalus created wings for himself and his son Icarus
out of wax and feathers to fly to safety; Icarus flew too near
the sun and fell to his death when the wax melted, but Daedalus
escaped.
-- MLW
Diggory, Amos
Cedric's father, works for the Department for the Regulation and
Control of Magical Creatures (GF).
Diggory, Cedric
1978 - 1995
Hufflepuff 1989 - 1995, Q. Seeker
Good-looking, Triwizard Champion. Killed by Wormtail at Voldemort's
command, June 24, 1995 (GF). [more]

Narnia tales, Digory Kirke. JKR has stated that she likes the
Narnia books and admires Lewis as a writer.

connection to Diagon Alley, of course) (fw/32).
Doge, Elphias
Old wizard, with a wheezy voice and silver hair. Doge was part
of the original Order of the Phoenix and at the time wore a "stupid
hat." Part of the Advance Guard that helped Harry in his
escape from the Dursley house (OP3).
An Elphias Levi wrote Dogme et Rituel de Haute Magie (Dogma and
Ritual of High Magic).
-- MLW
Dolohov, Antonin
Death Eater who was sent to Azkaban for the murders of the Prewett
brothers. Dolohov escaped from Azkaban early in 1996, along with
Bellatrix Lestrange, and rejoined Voldemort. He participated in
the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in June, 1996 and was
recaptured. Dolohov's "specialty attack" is a jet of
purple light cast in a zigzag pattern which causes severe internal
injury. (OP31)

Edgecombe, Marietta
b. c. 1979 (?)
Ravenclaw, 1990-1997 (?)
Friend of Cho Chang, daughter of Madam Edgecombe of the Department
of Magical Transportation, Floo Network Office. Marietta has curly,
reddish-blonde hair. She was dragged along to the DA meetings
by her friend Cho and signed her name to the parchment that lists
members of the group. However, she eventually sold out to Umbridge.
The parchment she signed, however, was jinxed, and Marietta's
face broke out in nasty purple postules spelling the word "SNEAK."
Before she could testify to Fudge, however, her memory was modified
by a timely Obliviate spell from Shacklebolt (OP27).
Edgecombe, Madam
Works for the Ministry of Magic in the Floo Network Office, which
is part of the Department of Magical Transportation. Madam Edgecombe
helped Fudge police the fires of Hogwarts while Umbridge had taken
over the school. Marietta Edgecombe is her daughter (OP27).
Egg, Professor Mordicus
Author of The Philosophy of the Mundane: Why Muggles Prefer Not
to Know.
Elfric the Eager
Was responsible for an uprising, therefore he was possibly a goblin
(SS16).
Elphick, Wilfred

to Gryffindor Tower. She gets a bit irritable occasionally. She
is friends with Violet whose portrait hangs in an antechamber
adjacent to the Great Hall. She has hung over the entrance to
Gryffindor tower for many years, dating at least as far back as
Molly and Arthur Weasley's time at Hogwarts.
Fawcett family
Family living near Ottery St. Catchpole (GF6). See also
Miss Fawcett.
Fawcett, Miss S.
b. 1980 (deduction)
Hufflepuff, 1991 - 1998 (CS11, GF16, 23) (see below)
Possibly part of the Fawcett family of Ottery St. Catchpole (see).
Attended the Duelling Club in 1992 (CS11) and the Yule Ball in
1994 (GF23). For a short time she had a long white beard, thanks
to trying to cross Dumbledore's Age Line to put her name in the
Goblet of Fire despite being underage (GF16).
During the meeting of the Duelling Club, Miss Fawcett was mentioned
as though she were grouped with other Hufflepuff in Harry's year.
She could not have attended the Yule Ball without an older date
unless she were at least in Harry's year. Dumbledore's Age Line
shows that she could not have started Hogwarts before 1990. It
seems a reasonable deduction that she is in Harry's year. Still,
this a deduction, not something stated explicitly in canon.
- MLW
Fenwick, Benjy
Member of the Order of the Phoenix in the 1970s, killed by Death
Eaters. They only found bits of him (OP9).
Figg, Arabella Doreen
See also detailed entry. Squib living in Wisteria Walk in Little
Whinging who monitors Harry with the help of her cats, including
Mr. Tibbles. Member of the Order of the Phoenix, alerted on Dumbledore's
orders as one of the "old crowd" after Voldemort's return
in June 1995 (GF36, OP1, OP2). Used to babysit Harry every year
on Dudley's birthday, but broke her leg in June 1991 tripping
over one of her cats. Dudley later knocked her down with his bike
in Privet Drive when Harry dropped out of sight during the summer
of 1991 (SS2,3). Testified on Harry's behalf at his disciplinary
hearing, claiming that as a Squib she could see Dementors although
Muggles cannot (OP8). Old lady, appears somewhat dotty, wears
tartan slippers and carries a string shopping bag. Although she
appears to talk to herself, other members of the OP are often
present under invisibility cloaks, and her cats understand human
speech (OP1, OP2).
Filch, Argus
Caretaker at Hogwarts c. 1990s Filch is a squib who treats students
as if they are vermin to be eradicated from the castle. See detailed
entry.
"Argus" - beast in Greek mythology, a watchman with
a hundred sets of eyes (200 in total)
"filch" - Eng. "steal"
Finch-Fletchley, Justin
b. 1980
Hufflepuff 1991 - 1998 (SS7)
A member of the DA, this curly-haired Muggle-born wizard was down
for Eton until he got the letter from Hogwarts. Justin was threatened
by a snake at the Dueling Club until Harry called it off, thus
publicly revealing his gift of Parseltongue (CS). Justin was Petrified
by the basilisk December 18, 1992.
Justin's name is sometimes given as "Fitch-Fletchley",
but that is incorrect.
Fingal the Fearless
Legendary Irish wizard who is alleged to have been an Aingingein
champion (QA)
Finnigan, Mrs.
Seamus' mother. He introduced her to Harry, Ron, and Hermione
at the Quidditch World Cup (GF7). She is a witch, but his father
is a Muggle who didn't find out until after they were married
that she had magic powers. Seamus' mother read the Daily Prophet
and believed that Dumbledore and Harry had gone crazy and were
lying about Voldemort's return. As a result, she seriously considered
not allowing Seamus to return to Hogwarts in September 1995 (OP11).
Finnigan, Seamus
b. 1980 (SS7)
Gryffindor, 1991 - 98 (SS7)
Worst fear: banshees (PA)
Irish, sandy hair; his father is a Muggle, and his mother didn't
tell his dad that she was a witch until after they were married,
which was a "(b)it of a nasty shock for him." The Sorting
Hat took almost a whole minute to decide his House (SS7). He's
good friends with Dean Thomas. The Finnigans camped out in the
Irish section of the campground at the 1994Quidditch World Cup
in a tent covered with live shamrocks (GF7). Seamus is a Kenmare
Kestrals fan (OP11).
Seamus and Harry had quite a falling out on their first night
back in fifth year (OP11), but eventually Seamus came around and
joined the DA (OP27).
In the film SS/f, Seamus has an ongoing problem with his spells
blowing up in his face. In one of the deleted scenes, he offered
to undo the Leg-Locker Curse which had been cast on Neville, but
was turned down. This offended Seamus, who announced that his
eyebrows have completely grown back, then walked away to reveal
that a patch of hair was missing on the back of his head. This
running gag was entirely invented by Steve Kloves, the scriptwriter,
from a single reference in SS when Seamus ignited a feather in
Charms class. Indeed, in the books it's Neville who melts cauldrons
and has all the accidents with magic, not Seamus (SS/f).
Flamel, Nicholas
alchemist, born c. 1326, still alive as of 1991
Famous for creating the only known Philosopher's Ston. in existence.
Dumbledore did some alchemical work with him, although not the
creation of that stone, since that must have happened six hundred
years ago for Flamel to still be alive in 1992 (SS17).
NOTE: The real Nicholas Flamel was born in 1330. Rowling changed
the birthyear for "her" Nicholas Flamel, apparently,
since the books claimed that he was "665 last year,"
which would have been in 1990 or 1991. The book, which was very
old, apparently adjusted itself to the year in which it is read,
or the reference would be utterly meaningless.
"According to history, Flamel died in 1410, a few years after
his wife, Perenelle..." (pp.71-73)
web link about the real Nicolas Flamel
essay by Brian Dorband about Flamel and the Stone
notes about using the real Flamel's birthdate as a basis for dating
the Harry Potter series
Flamel, Perenelle
Nicolas's wife, born c.1333 (SS17)
"Pernelle" is a play on ther word "perenial'' meaning
perpetual and everlasting.
Fletcher, Mundungus "Dung"
A bit crotchety, it seems, one of the "old crowd" (CS3,
GF10, 36). After the fracas at the World Cup, Fletcher turned
in a request to the Ministry for reimbursement for a 12-room tent
with en suite jacuzzi, but he had actually been sleeping under
a poncho propped up on sticks (GF10). He's a crook, which makes
him mighty handy to have around sometimes, since he hears things
others don't (OP). Mundungus, however, is a member of the Order
of the Phoenix (NR2, OP2-8) His nickname is "Dung".
Mundungus smokes a smelly pipe, although Molly doesn't like him
smoking it in the kitchen. She doesn't like him at all, come to
that.
"mundungus" reported to be the name of a particularly
smelly variety of tobacco
"fletcher" - [English] one who makes arrows (the feathers
are referred to as fletching)
Flint, Marcus
Slytherin, 1986 - 1994 (repeated a year), Q. Chaser and captain
From Sch1 interview:
Q: In the first book you said Slytherin house Quidditch captain
was sixth year Marcus Flint. If there are only seven years of
Hogwarts, why is he in the third book?
A: He had to do a year again! :-)
"flint" is a mineral known for its hardness. Arrowheads
were made out of flint.
Flitwick, Filius
See also detailed entry. Charms teacher, Hogwarts staff.
Florence
Probably a student at Hogwarts, a contemporary of Bertha Jorkins,
who spied on her and saw her being kissed by some unidentified
boy. Bertha complained to Dumbledore, the Headmaster, when she
was hexed as a result:
"He put a hex on me, Professor Dumbledore, and I was only
teasing him, sir, I only said I'd seen him kissing Florence behind
the greenhouses last Thursday..." (GF30)
Fortescue
Red-nosed, corpulent Wizard. Fortescue was at one time a Headmaster
of Hogwarts. Now his portrait hangs in the Headmaster's office
(OP).
Fortescue, Florean
Owns an ice cream parlor in Diagon Alley. Florean knows quite
a bit about medieval wizardry; When Harry was living at the Leaky
Cauldron for a couple of weeks, he spent part of his days working
on his homework at Florean's shop. Florean gave him free sundaes
every half hour and helped with his essay on medieval wizardry
(PA4).
Frobisher, Victoria (Vicky)
c. 1981-3? (at least 2nd year in autumn 1995)
Involved in many Societies, particularly Charms Club. Tried out
for Gryffindor Keeper in autumn 1995 and flew better than Ron
Weasley; however, she was rejected because she said that Charms
Club would rank higher in her priorities than Quidditch in the
event of a conflict (OP13).
Fudge, Cornelius
Minister of Magic (SS, CS, PA, GF, OP). See also detailed entry.
"fudge" Eng. to cheat or behave dishonestly; to fail
to fulfill a promise or obligation

See also detailed entry. Goyle acts as something of a bodyguard
for Draco Malfoy. His finger was bitten by Scabbers once (SS).
Goyle has short, bristly hair and long, gorilla-ish arms. He is
notoriously dim. He wears green dress robes and resembled, to
Harry's eyes, a large moss covered boulder when he arrived without
a date at the Yule Ball (GF). Goyle was made a Slytherin Beater
in his fifth year (OP).
from "gargoyle" stone demons carved into the exterior
of Gothic buildings as rain spouts
Goyle (Death Eater)
A large, somewhat oafish Death Eater (see) who stood with another
similar man named Crabbe at Voldemort's rebirthing party; the
father of Gregory Goyle (GF, OP).
Granger, Hermione Jane
b. September 1980 (SS, PA)
Gryffindor 1991 - 1998 (SS)
See also detailed entry. Muggle-born witch, the cleverest student
in Harry's year (apart from Defense Against the Dark Arts, where
Harry has been the standout since sometime during their third
year). The Sorting Hat considered putting her in Ravenclaw, but
settled on Gryffindor (her personal preference) (OP). Hermione
has bushy brown hair, and used to have large front teeth until
an incident during the 1994-5 school year involving a couple of
stray curses (Her parents, both of whom are dentists, had previously
resisted having her fix her teeth with magic, GF.) Hermione makes
little effort with her appearance as a general rule (OP24), but
she is in fact rather pretty. (OP23)
Used a Time Turner during the 1993-4 school year to take extra
classes (PA); has actually read Hogwarts, A History.

Gregory the Smarmy
Gregory was a medieval wizard who invented Gregory's Unctuous
Unction, a potion that made a person drinking it think whoever
gave it to them was their best friend. Gregory appears on Famous
Wizard card number 9 (CS/g). There is a secret passage at Hogwarts
located behind a statue of Gregory the Smarmy; George and Fred
found during in their first week (SS).
"smarmy" Eng. "revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating,
or false earnestness" (Merriam Webster dictionary online)

Grimstone, Elias
Broommaker from Portsmouth who crafted the Oakshaft 79 in 1879.
Grindelwald
The dark wizard that Dumbledore defeated in 1945 (SS6 & 13).
Because of the year of Grindelwald's defeat, which is stated on
the Chocolate Frog card about Dumbledore, some have speculated
that Grindelwald and Hitler were the same person or that Grindelwald
was somehow related to the events of World War II.
Grubbly-Plank, Professor Wilhemina
An elderly witch with closely cropped gray hair and a very prominent
chin; she was the substitute teacher who covered for Hagrid when
he was indisposed after Christmas break (January, 1995); Grubbly-Plank
knew a lot about unicorns and seemed to Lavender Brown and others
of Harry's year like a particularly good teacher compared to Hagrid,
who devoted most their class time looking after Skrewts (GF24)
Grubbly-Plank covered classes for Hagrid at the beginning of the
1995-6 school year and also took the first years across the lake
(OP11). Grubbly-Plank smokes a pipe. When Hagrid wasn't available,
she nursed Hedwig back to health after she was attacked delivering
mail to Harry (OP17).
Grunnion, Alberic
1803 - 1882
Famous wizard, face on a Chocolate Frog trading card (SS6) Alberic
Grunnion was the inventor of the Dungbomb (fw61).
Could possibly be in recognition of 'Alberich,' a powerful wizard
from "Song of the Nibelungen." The poem is mythical,
but was the basis for Wagner's Ring Cycle. In Wagner's version,
Alberich makes a ring from gold that he has found and places a
curse on it against its thief! Interestingly, one of the prizes
given to a 'hero' of the Ring Cycle is an Invisibility Cloak.
(contributed by Adrian Allum)
Gryffindor, Godric
One of the four founders of Hogwarts c.1000 AD
Guard, Platform Nine and Three Quarters
A wizened old guard sits by the ticket barrier that marks the

a gullible person
Gudgeon, Galvin
Galvin Gudgeon is the hapless seeker for the Chudley Cannons.
Manager Ragmar Dorkins implored fans not to curse him during the
match, since "turning him into a toad will not help his game."
Gudgeon did miss several excellent opportunities during a match
with the Appleby Arrows when the Snitch twice bounced off his
nose. In a match with the Tornados, Gudgeon fell off his broom
while trying to catch a passing butterfly. (DP)
Gudgeon, Gladys
Writes weekly fan mail to Lockhart (CS7, OP).
"gudgeon" (see reference for Davy Gudgeon above)
Guffy, Elladora

of practical jokes and has been known on occasion to enchant Mordaunt's
garden furniture. This infuriates Mr. Mordaunt, which he expresses
to the Daily Prophet in a letter (DP).

Visited with Gertie Keddle (c. 1000s), had a cup of nettle tea,
and asked Gertie to come out and watch the game going on in the
marsh. When Gwenog mentioned that she played the game herself,
Gertie went home in disgust. (QA)
