Hagrid, Rubeus
Gryffindor 1939-expelled 1942
made assistant groundkeeper by Dumbledore
Keeper of the Keys and Grounds
Half-giant, his mother, Fridwulfa, abandoned him and his Wizard father when he was a small child
Care of Magical Creatures teacher, Hogwarts staff
Played in the film by Robbie Coltrane. Both Jim Dale on the audio book recordings and Coltrane give Hagrid a Devon accent. Steve Kloves, the scriptwriter, invented a running gag in which Hagrid gives some bit of information away and they says "I shouldn't have told you that". This repetition never actually happens in any of the books.

"rubeus" L. red

"hagrid" O.E. haggard
"Hagrid is also is another old English word, meaning - if you were hagrid - it's a dialect word - you'd had a bad night. Hagrid is a big drinker - he has a lot of bad nights."
-- J.K. Rowling, The Connection [radio show], Oct 12, 1999.

Hagrid Sr.
Father of Rubeus, married Fridwulfa (a giant)
raised Rubeus alone after Fridwulfa left in 1932
died 1942, in Rubeus' second year at Hogwarts (GF24)
Black, crinkly eyes just like his son's (GF24)

Hengist of Woodcroft
Founder of Hogsmeade
Medieval, dates unknown
Driven away from his home by Muggle persecutors, Hengist is supposed to have settled in Scotland where he founded the village of Hogsmeade. Some say the Three Broomsticks Inn used to be his home (fw11, CS/g).
Hengist was a Saxon King of Britain shortly before King Arthur's time, who helped King Vortigern defeat Scot and Pict rebels. Later, he led a rebellion of his own, and eventually founded the county of Kent. Quite what this has to do with wizardry, I don't know, but David Colbert offers a similar suggestion in his book, The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter. (contributed by Adrian Allum)

Herpo the Foul
Ancient Greek Dark wizard who was the first known creator of a basilisk. He appears on Famous Wizard card number 4 (CS/g). Herpo was a Parseltongue so he could control the great serpent. (FB)
"herpeton" Gr. a reptile; from "herpo" Gr. to creep

Higgs, Terence

Inventor of the Pepperup Potion, cure for the common cold.

Hooch, Rolanda*
Teaches Flying (on broomsticks) to First Years at Hogwarts, referees most inter-House Quidditch matches. She has short, grey hair and yellow eyes like a hawk (SS9). She is an expert on racing brooms and can be as enthusiastic as any of the older House team players are, and while admiring Harry's Firebolt, she mentioned that she first learned to fly on a Silver Arrow (PA13). This is the only hint we've had as to her age; the Silver Arrow was manufactured very early in the 20th century before mass production was available (QA).
Played in the first film by Zoë Wanamaker.
* Madam Hooch's first name comes from the Trading Card Game; its canonicity is not known.

Hooper, Geoffrey
c. 1981-3? (at least 2nd year in autumn 1995)
Tried out for Gryffindor Keeper in autumn 1995 and flew better than Ron Weasley, but was rejected because Angelina said he's a real whiner.

Hopkirk, Malfalda

Responsible for warnings from Improper Use of Magic Office when underage magic is detected (CS, OP2).

Hornby, Olive
Hogwarts student, early 1940s
Teased Myrtle, who died and then haunted Olive.

Hornby (wizard)
Brother of Olive. Myrtle haunted his wedding back in the 1940s.

Johnson, Angelina
b. late October 1977, the week before Halloween (GF16)
Gryffindor (1989-96) Q. Chaser, captain (1995 - 1996)
Tall black girl (GF16); went to the Yule Ball with Fred Weasley (GF22, 23). Knocked off her broom by Montague during the Slytherin vs. Gryffindor final which decided the Quidditch Cup (PA15).

Jones, Gwenog
Quidditch Captain
1968 - present
Captain and Beater of only all-female national Quidditch team, the Holyhead Harpies. After a game she enjoys relaxing with friends, drinking butterbeer, and listening to The Weird Sisters. (fw) It has been said of Jones that "people who disagree with [her] have a nasty habit of turning into woodlice." She herself says that the Harpies "are easily the most exciting team playing," and added that witches make better Quidditch players than wizards. It is doubtful that anyone will disagree with her to her face. (DP)

Jones, Hestia
New member of the Order of the Phoenix. Pink-cheeked, black-haired witch who is part of the Advance Guard that helped Harry in his escape from the Dursley house (OP3).

Jordan, Lee
b. 1978
Gryffindor (1989 - 96)
Best friend of , commentates Quidditch matches.
Lee Jordan is a Gryffindor student two years older than Harry and Ron. He is a black boy with dreadlocks and is best friend and compatriot of Fred and George Weasley.

When Harry was on Platform Nine and Three Quarters for the first time, he saw Lee with a box, showing the contents off to several squealing students. He had a huge hairy tarantula in the box. (SS6). Lee commentates the Quidditch matches at Hogwarts, using a magical megaphone to make his voice heard all over the stadium. He does try to be impartial, but he has been known to pepper his commentary with his own personal opinions on everything from the model of broomstick someone is flying to the fact that Angelina Johnson won't go out with him. Lee gets a bit carried away sometimes, particularly when Gryffindor is playing Slytherin and the green team cheats. McGonagall always stands by to take the megaphone away if he gets out of hand.

When the Weasley twins left Hogwarts, they left Lee in a bit of a funk. As a way of doing his bit for Dumbledore and also to fill the empty place left by Fred and George's departure, Lee levitated a couple of Nifflers up and through Umbridge's window. They proceeded to tear the place apart and attacked Umbridge when she walked in.Unfortunately, Umbridge blamed this on Hagrid and used it as a reason to get him sacked. (OP32)

Jorkins, Bertha
b. 1958 (approximate)
attended Hogwarts in the 1970s, House not given
According to Sirius and borne out by what others have said who knew her, Bertha wasn't very bright, but had an excellent memory, a lot of curiosity, and no savvy about when to keep her mouth shut - a very bad combination for a gossipy woman who chose a career in the Ministry of Magic. At one time in the 1980s she worked closely with Barty Crouch senior, and learned his most dangerous secret by accident. When she confronted him, he Memory Charmed her so powerfully that he permanently damaged her memory. She was bounced from Department to Department for years in the Ministry and considered a liability rather than an asset, ending up in the Department of Magical Games and Sports. She was captured by Wormtail and turned over to Voldemort during the summer of 1994, where she was tortured until she gave up all the information she possessed, then was killed by Voldemort personally (GF).
Sirius told Harry in GF19 that Bertha was in Hogwarts "a few years above" himself and James, so she was at least two years older but no more than six.

Bertha didn't have the brains to be a Ravenclaw and doesn't seem the type for Slytherin; given that Sirius knew her fairly well and that she was bold enough to confront Crouch, she may have been a Gryffindor. However, that is merely speculation. -- MLW

Jugson
Death Eater who fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries (OP

Karkaroff, Igor
Former Death Eater who ratted out his fellows when caught by the Ministry in exchange for being spared a life sentence in Azkaban. He then became head of Durmstrang Institute and aged a great deal in appearance over the next decade or so. He cultivates a cheery manner, but his smile doesn't reach his eyes. He ran for his life in June 1995 when the Dark Mark burned into his arm showed that Voldemort had returned; his current whereabouts are unknown (GF).

Keddle, Gertie
Lived on the edge of Queerditch Marsh in the eleventh century
wrote in her diary about neighbors playing a primitive form of Quidditch (QA)
picked nettles in the marsh, invited her friend Gwenog over for a cup of nettle tea

Kegg, Roland
1903 - present
President of English Gobstones team (fw76).

Keitch, Randolph

Kettleburn, Professor
Care of Magical Creatures teacher until September, 1993, when he retired to spend time with "his remaining limbs." Hagrid took over for Kettleburn in 1993. (PA

Kevin
2-year-old boy, hanging around his parents' tent bright and early in the morning at the Quidditch World Cup campground. He plays with his father's wand and manages to enlarge a slug, much to his mother's dismay. She takes the wand away and tells him that he's not allowed to play with Daddy's wand. (GF7)

Kevin's mother
Took the wand away from Kevin and accidentally stepped on an enlarged slug (GF7).

King, R. J. H.
Student at Hogwarts in the late 60s/early 70s. He or she played Quidditch for Gryffindor, and in 1969 won a small plaque which is now part of a trophy in the trophy room (SS/f).
NOTE: King's name appears on a wooden shield in the Trophy Room in the film only. Other information on that shield is problematic since it contradicts JKR's statement that James Potter was a Chaser. Therefore King cannot be considered part of the official canon.

Kirke, Andrew
Gryffindor, mid 1990s
Q. Beater, 1995-6
Kirke is at least a second year during the 1995 - 96 season, so he would have started Hogwarts no earlier than 1989 and no later than 1994.
The name, Andrew Kirke, is the name of the Magician of the title of The Magician's Nephew by C. S. Lewis. Rowling is a great admirer of Lewis's books.

Kneen, Goodwin
A wizard from Yorkshire who in the 12th Century wrote his cousin Olaf in Norway about playing a "spirited game of Kwidditch last Sunday night." He speaks of a player in the position of Catcher and a ball called a Blooder. Kneen was married to Gunhilda (QA).

Kneen, Gunhilda
Wife of Goodwin Kneen who was to have played Catcher against the Ilkley team, but due to a case of dragon pox had to sit out the match. She was a bit upset when her husband came home late after celebrating their win, so she fired off some nasty jinxes at him, including one which removed his fingers temporarily (QA3).

Knightley, Montague
1506 - 1588
Wizard Chess Champion. (fw35)
A knight is a playing piece in chess.

Krum, Viktor
b. 1977
Bulgarian Seeker at the Quidditch World Cup, August 1994
Krum was the Triwizard Champion from Durmstrang Institute during the 1994 - 1995 Tournament; he was a final-year student at the time, and a favorite of his headmaster, Igor Karkaroff. He became romantically interested in Hermione, who accompanied him to the Yule Ball and served as his hostage during the Second Task (GF8). He was still corresponding with her a year later, although she appears to have declined his invitation to visit during the summer of 1995 in favor of staying with the Weasleys at Number 12 Grimmauld Place.
