Ninja Gaiden taught me more than I could ever have expected. First, let's take a look at what it taught me about my playing ability.
Thanks to Ninja Gaiden, I know that I am a skilled NES player. Not everybody can reach Level 6-4 in only three days, the first three days that they truly play Ninja Gaiden. But Ninja Gaiden also proved to me that I'm missing a key ingredient. I feel as though my actual game play is impeccable, but my thought process on how to kill bosses etc. is lacking. I need to take more time, plan more, don't worry about finishing a level quickly. Slow and steady wins the race.
I also learned extreme patience. I never, ever, threw my controller. My only outbursts consisted of muttering swears to the beat of that annoying game over music. But that's pretty small, when you consider the challenges you face in Ninja Gaiden.
I also learned how to use some strategies to defeat bosses. Here's how I defeated the tougher bosses:
Act 3 - Big Fat Guy - Stand about a fifth of the way in from the left of the screen, so that the fat guy doesn't land on you when he comes down. When he lands on your side, slash him with your sword. Never turn around to face the right side, except to do away with the bullets he shoots at you from the right (these can be killed with your sword). Thanks to...Anti-Felix? for this strategy.
Act 4 - Two dogs - One of these dogs is a dud and cannot be injured, first find out which one this is. Then, go after the other one. Conventional wisdom says to wait under a pedestal where the dogs cannot land and slash at the real boss when he comes near. However, I prefer to track the real boss around the arena, slashing at him from behind whenever he lands. This strategy works for me, but you must remember to keep an eye out for the fake boss shooting poison at you. Rule number one when using this strategy is Trust Your Instinct. Go with your gut feelings of where the real boss is going to land and get ready.
Act 5 - Malth - Malth is simple. Duck right next to him and slash as fast as you can. Press that B button like you never have before, and, if you're lucky, you'll kill him with about two bars left on your health.
That's it for now, hopefully I'll have beaten some more bosses after the second Ninja Gaiden Project.
