Welcome back to the NES Superlatives!  Today's category is quite intersting because it doesn't deal with the games themselves, but the buttons that you use to play them!  That's right, our five judges are going to be figuring out which button is the most useful.  Let's have a look at the four nominees:

Control Pad

Where would you be without this little fellow?  Stuck!  If it weren't for the control pad, you couldn't move.
Pros: The most commonly used button, and it still doesn't stop working until it gets sticky.
Cons: Switching from left to right or vice versa takes a little bit longer than it does on a joystick.

Select and Start

Need to pause a game for a bathroom break, or to catch a breather in the heat of the battle?  Here's where you turn.
Pros: Nothing really significant.
Cons: Many gamers are still confused as to the select button's purpose.

A and B

Whenever you want to perform an action, such as kick or shoot, the A and B buttons are there to help you.
Pros: Dimpled design helps your fingers stay on the buttons.
Cons: Buttons are out of order, with B coming before A.

Power and Reset

All other buttons are useless until Power is hit, it starts the game.  And Reset is extremely handy after you get killed.
Pros: Starts all games, ends all games.
Cons: Pressing the Power button and getting a flashing screen is a real bummer.

Ok, folks, now that you've met the nominees, it's time to see how the judges voted:

Judge #1: For me, there's only one choice.  A and B buttons.  I never really minded the fact that their out of order, and the fact that they are so close together helps me use one finger for both of them.

Judge #2: I have to go with the Control Pad.  No specific reason why...I just do.

Judge #3: Me and my bladder problem...I always find myself pausing the game and running to the can.  That's why I vote for Select and Start.

Judge #4: Control Pad.  I'm a big fan of games such as Ninja Gaiden, so I've mastered moving side to side.

Well, this could be interesting!  If Judge #5 votes for A and B buttons or Select and Start, we'll have the first tie in history!

Judge #5: I've never had problems with my NES, because I have a top-loader.  My power button has always been trustworthy.  That's why my vote goes to Power and Reset.

So the winner is Control Pad, 2 to 1 to 1 to 1.  It was a close match, but it just goes to show: Four buttons are better than two.  Until next time, I'm Double L for the NES Superlatives.  Have a nice day.
