There are six categories for your position players - hitting, batting, running, defense, luck, and prestige. Obviously, luck and prestige are not as important as the other attributes. This gives you four things that you can build your team around.
First, however, you have to become a good all-around team. I recommend having all eight of your starters with at least five points in each of the four major categories before you decide what you will specialize in.
The category that I chose is batting, which is power hitting. I'm going to try to make a case for why this is the best specialty, but you may disagree and that's fine. I'll just laugh at you when your team flounders.
Power is great. If you are down by a few runs, it gives you the chance to catch up with one swing of the bat. Whereas other categories might require three consecutive players to get hits, just one hit with power as your specialty will change the score.
Hitting may help you make contact, but nobody ever won games by hitting the ball hard to infielders every single time they swing. Hitting needs running skills also to be effective, as the balls you'll be hitting will often be ground balls and you'll need a fast pair of legs to beat the throw to first.
Running can be a very effective specialty. If running is your top skill, you'll be able to beat out the weak ground balls that you'll be hitting because you don't have much power. Running is also a good advantage in the field; you can reach a lot of the balls. The only thing that running really does to hurt you is it makes you too eager to reach the next base because you know you're fast. When you can run real fast, you get too aggressive, or at least that's what happens to me when I have a fast runner.
Defense is great, but defense only encompasses a player's throwing ability. He'll still have trouble running to the ball because you don't have running ability.
As you can see, the top two are batting and running. If you have the money, I'd recommend an even blend of the two. However, if you're running short on cash, choose batting. It gives you enough firepower to compete with even the best of the teams in Baseball Stars.
