I have lots of good experiences at Funcoland. Well, maybe not good, but not bad. However, these nondescript trips often don't get remembered. As amazing as it may seem, though, I went to a Fucnoland last month and was astounded at the knowledge and courtesy of one employee.
First, I walk into the Funcoland and there is nobody in line. That right there is a good sign. I look behind the counter and count the shelves that have NES games in them. There are 13. Two more than last time. That means sixty more games. So I'm already in a good mood.
As usual, I hang around the store for awhile. Pick up a price guide, look at the controllers in the bin, check out the SNES boxes in the back...got reacquainted with the store. After looking at the price guide for a minute, I walk up to the counter and return Baseball, which had not worked. I ask if they have another copy, but the guy checks and says no. He does tell me, however, that I can pick a game of equal value. So I start scanning the price guide for a 79 cent game.
There aren't that many 79 cent games on the list. While I'm busy choosing between Anticipation and Captain Skyhawk, some adult comes in and wants to buy a Playstation. You know how it goes when the adults come into Funcoland. They get the whole speech and buy into the whole thing; the ordeal takes over ten minutes.
Well, anyway, I look up from the price guide and give the employee a look that says "I've chosen a game." Without hesitation, he cuts the guy off and tells him that he has to help me because I was here first. Totally cool!
After he gets me Anticipation, I start asking him for other games. "Do you have Baseball Simulator?" I ask. This starts a conversation on the best baseball games for the NES. I'm really starting to like this employee.
"Do you have Blades of Steel?" I ask. The employee starts getting all nostalgic about the days that he played Blades of Steel with his friends. He tells me that he still has his NES and plays it on occasion.
"Do you have Magic of Scheherazade?" I ask the employee. The employee looks under "M" and says, sorry, we don't have it. I'm fine with this. I was already pleased that Funco had had a couple of games I wanted.
"Ok, then that will be it," I say. The employee then starts to ring up the games. All of a sudden, he gets an idea and looks for M of S under "S". And there it is. He went out of my way to get me a game, when the game only cost two bucks.
Guess not everyone at Funco employee is bad.
