What's up everybody?  Our next award to be presented is for the best sports game.  There were some real good ones out there on the NES, but only a choice five got nominated.  We have a football game, a baseball game, a hockey game, and a couple others as well.  I know that you just can't wait to hear the winner, so let's get to the nominees!

Tecmo Super Bowl
This game is undeniably the best football game on the platform.  With cinema scenes, fluid play control, real player names, and season mode, Tecmo Super Bowl raised the ball for football games on the NES.

Baseball Stars
Of the five nominees, this game certainly has the most replay value.  You can spend tons of time on this game, powering up your team to make them unstoppable.  While this may appeal to some gamers, not everyone has enough time to build the unstoppable squad.  That could go against it here.

Ice Hockey
Ice Hockey didn't have detailed statistics, sophisticated graphics, or multiple modes of play.  But while it didn't have any of the things that appeal to the sports video game connoisseur, it still was fun.  A true classic, Ice Hockey has a way to keep you playing it.  And we all know that the prospect of beating the Ruskies made this game a hit.

Super Spike V'Ball
You can't find a volleyball game on a modern platform these days, but if you just looked at Super Spike V'Ball you'd think that companies would be drawing numbers for the rights to produce a beach volleyball cart.  This game really captured the fun of beach volleyball.  If you have three friends, you can have a great time using this game's four-player capabilities. It also had some great replay value - the World Cup matches could be quite a challenge.
Note: Double L has beaten this game, so don't think he sucks at it.  He also defeated the U.S. Navy 15-0.

World Class Track Meet
An Olympics-style game seems to come around, well...every time the Olympics come around.  Unforunately, a good game of this style doesn't come around every four years.  But World Class Track Meet was different.  If you used the Power Pad to compete, the games could be quite fun.

The judges have made their decisions...

Judge #1: All of the five games are worthy ones, but for me, Baseball Stars is the best of them all.  I really liked how most of the games turned into slugfests - high-scoring baseball contests rock.

Judge #2: I had to think for a while, but in the end I decided on Super Spike V'Ball.  Of the five games, it was the most challenging - challenge is, in my opinion, one of the most important things in a sports game

Judge #3: Definitely Tecmo Super Bowl!  I'd have voted for this classic even if it wasn't football season.  Tecmo Super Bowl really captured the football spirit, and the power to go after QBs as LT was an added bonus.

Judge #4: Ice Hockey.  As a gamer who doesn't always have much time to play, I like a game where I can just sit down and play for fifteen minutes.  Ice Hockey is definitely that.

Judge #5: I am a huge sports game fan.  I like them more than any other genre.  So this is a very hard decision for me to make.  Of the nominees, it's either Tecmo Super Bowl or Super Spike V'Ball.  Each of them had some great qualities, each of them had some bad traits.  But there was one thing that has always stuck out in my mind, and that thing is Tecmo Super Bowl's poor graphics.  So I have to vote for Super Spike V'Ball.

In a close vote, Super Spike V'Ball takes the win!  Most people were predicting a TSB runaway, so this just goes to show that anything can happen in an NES Superlative.  Let's go to another commercial break...
