Double L: The stakes are high here at the World's Strongest NES Cart Championships. We're mere minutes away from the final event.
Kaz: Yes. We've got a doozy, too. All carts are in contention for the championship, even after four grueling events.
Double L: Allow me to explain. In this event, first place gets ten points, second gets six, third gets two, and last, of course, gets none. If SMB wins, or if it finishes second with SMB/DH winning, it wins. If DH finishes first, it wins the competition. If SMB/DH/WCTM wins the event, it takes the competition. But SMB/DH needs a bit of help. If it wins and SMB does not finish second, it wins the competition..
Kaz: Let's simplify. It is, besides a couple instances, a winner take all event.
Double L: And what an event it's going to be. This brand new course allows all four carts to compete head-to-head and incorporates all of the previous events.
Kaz: This setup is similar to the gigantic slide seen at some carnivals, only better. The carts start rolling down the slide and have about five seconds before reaching the first obstacle. A motion sensor will set off the robotic arm, which will toss the cart into the air, as in event number one. The cart needs to fly at least ninety feet, because that's where the slide starts up again.
Double L: Then it's on to the drop. The course takes a straight downward turn for about 25 feet. The carts will go flying down through the air, losing all of their forward momentum. The carts with good form in the air will have the best landing, and will therefore start moving again sooner.
Kaz: Next, the bat smack. Similar to the toss, a motion sensor will put the bat in motion. The cart must travel at least 80 feet in the air in order to reach the point where the track starts again.
Double L: Finally, there's the punt. 35 feet above the boot, the track starts again. The cart must be punted at least 35 feet in the air to reach the new track. After the punt, there's a short straightaway. It could come down to that.
Kaz: And if it is a close one, look for SMB/DH/WCTM to eek it out. That cart's higher weight could prove to be the advantage that it needs.
Double L: The whole race will take about 30 seconds.
Kaz: Yes, it's pretty quick. My oh my, Double L. When I took this job, I wondered if NES carts could be exciting, but I have no doubt in my mind that they can be.
Double L: The carts are being put in the starting blocks. Oh, just listen to the crowd! This is some atmosphere.
Kaz: The carts are starting 300 feet above the finish line.
Double L: The carts will be released in 3...2...1...and they're off!
Kaz: Duck Hunt looks great out of the blocks! SMB struggling, going side to side in it's lane!
Double L: Yes, SMB is adding extra distance to the course! It's fallen ten cart lenghts behind!
Kaz: Duck Hunt with a slight lead approaching the toss, SMB/DH and SMB/DH/WCTM tied for second.
Double L: They've hit the toss, the first three carts have made it...SMB has also crossed the 90 foot gap. And with lots of room to spare, I might add!
Kaz: At the toss, Duck Hunt had a .2 second lead, with SMB 1.1 seconds behind.
Double L: SMB making up ground like you wouldn't believe! SMB/DH pulling into first by a length!
Kaz: They're all at the drop...they all have good form down, oh, SMB, nailing the earlier events! It made up a good half second on regaining the momentum.
Double L: SMB/DH has a two length lead, all the other carts are in a virtual tie for second!
Kaz: SMB/DH is increasing it's lead slightly on this straightaway.
Double L: Now at the bat smack...they all look good...
Kaz: Duck Hunt is going way high in the air! This could kill it! It's taking forever to come down!
Double L: And now that it's back on the track it's a second behind!
Kaz: Take DH out of the running, it's too late for a comeback.
Double L: Here it is, the punt. This will be the hardest obstacle to overcome, 35 feet is a good height.
Kaz: They've all been booted...and they've all reached it! It's a 3-cart race!
Double L: SMB/DH is now slipping...look at that, with 100 yards to go they are all within .03 seconds of each other!
Kaz: SMB/DH/WCTM looks to have it's weight take over here, this is it's race to win...but it's sliding side to side in it's lane and losing speed! Oh, it lost about two-tenths of a second!
Double L: But it's making that up now, using it's speed. It's caught SMB...but it can't catch SMB/DH!
Kaz: SMB/DH is a cart on a mission! It's got a three-length lead...four...five...closing in on the finish line...it took it!
Double L: SMB and SMB/DH/WCTM are approaching the line now...oh, too close to call. DH now coming in a distant 4th.
Kaz: Too close to call! Same thing with the whole competition! If SMB got second, it wins, but if SMB/DH/WCTM got second, SMB/DH is your winner!
Double L: They're viewing the instant replay now...wow.
Kaz: That's close. But...look look look! I think SMB/DH/WCTM got a corner across before SMB.
Double L: Yes, you're right! Ladies and gentlemen, SMB/DH has won the event and the competition!
Kaz: Oh, a total come from behind victory! You gotta love it!
Double L: SMB/DH the winner in a whopper of a competition. Wow, this was great. This concludes NEStopia's coverage of the Finale event of WSNC. In two days, NEStopia will have the post-competition press conference. I hope to see you there.
