The first time I played NES, I'm pretty sure that I was in kindergarten. At the time, I did not have any game systems myself. As we all know, when you're in kindergarten you go to a friend's house pretty much once or twice a week. Well, one of my good friends in kindergarten was Aki Miyasaka (his real name was Akiyoshi). As you can probably tell, he was Japanese. He came to the states when I was in kindergarten, and he picked up English pretty quickly. I think it was toward the end of the year, and it was my first time going over to his house.
I took the bus home with Aki and after the bus dropped us off, we had a two or three minute walk to his house. On the way, he asked me, "What do you want to do when we get there?"
I didn't really know what to say. I was in kindergarten, and I had no clue what a Japanese person's home was like. I don't think I said anything back, just shrugged my shoulders.
"We could play NES," he said. "Have you ever played it?"
I told him that I had never played NES, but really wanted to. How could I not? It was my first opportunity to play a video game, and I wanted to see what it was like.
When we got to Aki's house, we went into his family room. "Do you want to play Super Mario 2?" he asked.
I didn't know one game from the next. "Sure," I said. I hoped that this would be a fun game.
Aki popped in the game cartridge and turned on the system. The screen came up. And it was instant bliss. I think Aki and I played Super Mario 2 the whole day. After that, I made sure to go to Aki's house whenever I could.
