Ninja Gaiden I - Heroes
Ryu Hayubasa - Ryu is the main character of Ninja Gaiden; the ninja that you control. At the beginning of Ninja Gaiden, he finds a letter from his father, Ken. It reads something like this: "I am off to America to fight a life or death duel. If it is destiny that I not return, you must travel to America to avenge my death." With Ken not yet back, Ryu does what the letter says, and that is where you pick up the game. At the beginning, Ryu does not know much of why he is in America. But through Ninja Gaiden's great cinema scenes, he is informed of the importance of his mission.
Irene Lew - Ryu meets up with Irene after the first Act of Ninja Gaiden. At first, Ryu dismisses Irene as just a girl. Later she gives him a statue and tells him not to lose it. She's comparable to the Bond chick in the 007 movies in that she helps the main character.
Dr. Walter Smith - This man used to work with Ryu's father, Ken. After the second Act, Ryu meets up with him. A long cinema scene ensues in which Dr. Smith gives Ryu background information on the statue that he has, and the statue that he doesn't. As the two of them talk, a thief steals the statue that Ryu has set down. Ryu chases after the thief. When he returns, Dr. Smith has been murdered.
Foster - Foster is a man with a high ranking job in the Secret Auxiliary Unit of the CIA. Ryu finds him after Act Three, and Foster fills Ryu in about what is going on. He asks Ryu for his help.
Ken Hayubasa - Ryu's father, also a ninja. The person who he fought with in the life or death duel was Bloody Malth. When Bloody Malth defeated him, Ken was not killed, but instead he was taken control of by the Jaquio. Ken Hayubasa then became The Masked Devil, a possessed ninja who Ryu has to fight in a later battle…
Ninja Gaiden I - Villains
Barbarian - Barbarian is the first (and weakest) member of the Malice Four. He is fought after Act 1-1. The manual for Ninja Gaiden says "…who will cut anything to shreds that gets in his way." Hardly. Barbarian wields an ax, but he can't hit you for his life (really). The only way Barbarian can hurt you is if you run into him.
Bomberhead - The second member of the Malice Four, Ryu meets up with Bomberhead after Act 2-2. Bomberhead is armed with a sickle which he swings around on a chain. Bomberhead may not be the fastest fighter, but take him for granted and he will do some serious damage, maybe even kill you.
Basaquer - The third boss and, IMHO, the first real challenge of the game (the end of 3-2 is also hard, but there's a pattern to it). Basaquer, despite appearing more rotund than the first two bosses, can move. He jumps in arcs from one side of the room to the other. Every third jump, he releases a volley of three bullets that slowly but surely make their way toward you. This boss may take you awhile.
Kelbeross - The Kelbeross used to be the Jaquio's pet dog. However, he became a sacrifice offering for the evil spirits. His soul has returned and taken the form of an evil creature to protect the Jaquio. Kelbeross will shoot poison at you, and attempt to crush you by landing on top of you.
Bloody Malth - The leader of the Malice Four and boss of Act 5, Bloody Malth is the one who killed Ken Hayubasa, Ryu's father. He uses secret fighting techniques from the Orient that have seemingly made him invincible.
The Jaquio - The Jaquio is the man who the Malice Four work for. He intends to combine the powers of the two statues and unleash the demon, who he hopes will give him world power.
