When you are at La Mucuy Alta...
This area is very beautiful, and a placid place to rest. Click here or on thumbnail at left to get a map of this area.
It ia a must reporting at Ranger House (where jeeps leave you), and you must get a pass to camping and trekking at Sierra Nevada. This house is open from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm. The Chief Ranger is Mr. Alirio Nieto, and often you'll be served by Mr. Nelson Ramírez.
Rangers are very strict regarding regulations. There is a minimum equipment list that all trekkers must carry, and rangers often open backpacks to verify you're indeed carrying the required gear. The passes cost as follows:
- License to camp at La Mucuy: Bs. 1000 (US$ 1.70) by each night and each tent.
- Trekking Pass: Bs. 300 (US$ 0.5) by each night and each tent + Bs. 100 (US$ 0.20) by person/day (venezuelan) + Bs. 500 (US$ 0.85) person/day (foreigner).
The Trekking Pass must be signed by the group leader, and he/she will be legally responsible for trekkers well being. Besides, if there is a minor in the group, you must carry an authorization signed by minor's relatives and a photocopy of identity card (or passport) of that relative.

La Mucuy's camping area is located in a nice forest of pines, willows and eucalyptus. It has basic services as drinking water and rest rooms, but there are no showers. You have to walk to El Loro river (about 200 m away) in order to take a bath, and the water is very cold.
In order to continue your trip, you have to walk to high part of La Mucuy; there your find this bifurcation and take the road at right. There are several houses and a narrow trail between them, leading to a small portal (see map).

That portal marks trail start point and the beginning of cloud forest. At its side there is a board with distances and estimated times. Do not pay attention to those times, because they were estimated without gear.
