Side Notes:

SciTech, for some reason, carries with it a dark stigma, especially since technological study was added to its collective. The tier now carries significant power and influence, and SciTech agents are constantly being admonished by other tier officials for overstepping their bounds. Those agents have the authority to - and therefore have developed the habit of - either ignoring the complaints, or "addressing" the complainee directly.

Patent laws have caused some discord from privately owned foundations and scholastic institutions, who feel this gives Tech too much influence on projects generated from and within the populace. Those laws are under review, but are in place now to prevent the creation, accidental or not, of devices or weapons deemed harmful to the people at large.

Rapid scientific and technological change has transformed Ferratu society. The Tier of Science and Technology is responsible for all scientific research, the collection of all pertinent data, and development of technological advances for all Ferratu theatres. SciTech's authority yields to the Tier of Government Operations and to the praetor.

A primary area of concentration in SciTech is cognitive engineering. This is the application of computer science principles by which the need, use, production or revision of concepts and artifacts are made useful to people in their home or work environment. Research is more focused on the development of software systems.

OFFYCE of SCIENCE
The Offyce of Science, one of the busiest of sub-tiers, is multi-faceted and provides a number of services. Worship and Awareness shares mutual environmental interests with tier researchers towards maintaining, and exploring, cleaner methods of power production. Purer methods of garbage and waste disposal is an ongoing topic of exploration, and has kept the seas and skies virtually unpolluted for nearly five generations.

GovOps has a vested interest in the undersea mino gem mining, a once painfully frustrating industry due to the random location of gem beds. Scientists, using atmospherics and studying current tendencies, have made spotting those resources more convenient. The EDIC is kept in business by the production and tax base generated by mino sales.

The fruits of the main areas are generaly applied to other tiers and the private citizenry based on the contracted project. Some examples are:

OFFYCE of TECHNOLOGY
The rigidly neutral Offyce of Technology supplies EDIC with newly discovered (or covertly purchased) manufacturing data. The highly classified Offyce of Information, which act as the "eyes" of Ferrata, furnishes Contests with background bios for their cases, or secret information for the Horns.

The Offyce of Technology is almost a sub-tier unto itself, and was once housed under the EDIC. The private sector, at one time, adequetely handled the task of upgrading and researching technological advances, and their competitive nature only reaped benefits for Ferrata. However, that same competitive spirit also led to the unmanaged development and dissemination of technology to the private sector without government approval or safeguards against accidental harm. All technological grants were removed, and diverted at first to GovOps. That responsibility was soon transferred to SciTech for convenience and better management, and has stayed there ever since.

Technology is responsible for the research, testing, and "drawing board" development of most machine-based equipment. It's mandate is to look at contemporary devices and ways of doing things, looking into the future, and striving for that future. From the first seemless radio transmitter created by Ulimpi'ades during the exploration of post-Udias times to today's study of creating artificial satellites (for weather monitoring and communications purposes only, of course), Technology has been there.

The offyce is also in charge of patents. Devices or theories made in the name of analytical, academic, experimental, or scientific technology are listed. Practical experimentation and implementation of these devices fall under the scrutiny of Tech...for safety reasons.
