Oh, hey, I added a link to my Amazon-wishlist down there....hint-hint..... Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 Elizabeth George, “A traitor to memory”. I finally did it, I finished the book. Only took me a month. No problem. I read all of her books and I am a big fan, but, MAN, what was she thinking? Too long, too little of Lynley and Havers, too much info that did not really contribute to the story, too long, very little story line, no new development in the established characters, did I mention that it was too long? If you’re a fan, save the money and time….If this is your first attempt at one of her books, DON’T! It might put you off forever, read one of her early ones….What a big dissapointment! Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002 Sarah Dunant, “Transgressions”, I finished that book on the flight to Germany and have already problems remembering what it was about. Woman gets stalked, but nobody believes her, as she is going through a hard time after a messy separation. I am no prude, but the sexuality described in the book put me off. Brutal, aggressive. Not a lot of suspense. Mostly boring. Don’t bother. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 Peter Ustinov, “The old man and Mr. Smith”, god and the devil visit earth in a disguise....Unfortunately and rather unexpectedly pretty boring. I am sure there were some really deep thoughts about the state of the world in this book somewhere, I was just too bored to pay much attention. Nonetheless I sort of skip-read it till the end, because I wanted to know if it amounted to anything enlightening in the end. Nope. Sorry, Peter, I prefer you as an actor. Friday, Aug. 09, 2002 Grant Naylor, “Red Dwarf” – bought the book, never read it, then moved to the UK and saw the TV show. Realised that I had the book and never bothered to read it, because now I knew the story. The TV show is one of my favourites. Weird Brits get lost in space….and holograms and mechanoids and cats….. I finally read the book now and it is really funny! The ending is very strange though. And you probably need an English sense of humour to get a kick out of this. If you like Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Tom Sharp and co., this is for you! Tuesday, Aug. 06, 2002 M. Vazquez Montalban, “Asesinato en el Comite Central” (“Murder in the Central Committee”). The classic story of a murder in a closed and empty room, with an alteration – a murder committed in a closed, peopled and totally dark room. So who of the people present did it? The story line was not bad, but he tended to ramble on a bit about a variety of subjects that did not actually drive the story forward. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but can get boring eventually. I skipped a lot of paragraphs, because they just did not interest me and I wanted to get on with the story. Definitely nothing for people, that do not have an affinity for Spanish/South American writing. Yadder-yadder-yadder! |
