It’s the prophet Mohameds birthday today and I have a day off, el hamdillullah! Not up to much, will make some breakfast in a little while and then watch some telly. Finish reading my book. That’s about it.

What would your bed say about you?

“Oh, you again? You haven’t been here much!”

“The alarm’s gone 5 times so far. Stop hitting that snooze button and GET UP already!”

“Oi! You came in here for an early night. You’ve been reading for 3 hours now. It is 2pm AGAIN! Stop it now and SLEEP!”

“You are tired? Oh, ha, wouldn’t have the slightest idea why that might be!”

“What do you mean, you can’t sleep? Well, I would be hyperactive, too, if I played Divine Destiny for 5 hours in a row before coming here!”

“Ah, yes, actually, that WAS the alarm. Stop living in denial. Ok, ok, it’s not so bad, stop crying….yeah, that’s better, I won’t say a peep for the next 5 minutes….”

Hm, I actually misread that, it’s what my bed would say ABOUT me, not TO me. Well, whatever, it was a lot more fun like that…..

“Oi, you! Yes, you! Over there in that living room in front of that damn machine, switch that off and get in here! Shut-eye, pronto!”

“Is she asleep? Shhht!”

Got my decoder back, wehee! Now I just have to get my cushions tomorrow, and I am set for the day off on Tuesday. The prophet’s birthday. Ta. Much appreciated. Will do a little food shopping tomorrow night and then spend Tuesday on the balcony. Haven’t managed to get in contact with Ji. We wanted to meet on Friday and I sort of cancelled that. I think I might have pissed her off on a permanent basis. Her mobile is either off or nobody picks up. Haven’t managed to get her on her landline either. On the other hand I might just be slightly paranoid, her battery was flat and they had a busy weekend.

It is getting hotter. And I think this still qualifies as spring. I just checked, it’s 10.30 pm and 25 degrees. Still bearable but that duvey goes on the weekend. Just came home from my Arabic class and had to have a shower. Sticky…. Good thing about it – too hot to eat much. Should be a good opportunity to loose a little weight.
Took Mustapha round to the crummy furniture shop, some testosterone was asked for. He staged “upset Egyptian male in heat” very effectively. Lots of agitated hand movements and raised voices, followed by the usual buddy ritual of slapping each others backs. He took the guy’s phone number – the cushions are promised for Monday afternoon. Insha’allah!
As I am without decoder – that gets tackled tomorrow after work – I watch DVDs a lot at the moment. Finally had enough of the puny loudspeakers in my laptop. Found this pretty state of the art computer shop. Bought loudspeakers today. The cheapest ones they had, but what a nice difference.
Glass of wine, book, bed…

I still do not have the cushions for my balcony furniture. I am contemplating to pay the guy a visit late at night and burn down his shitty shop. I am cursing myself for being such a stupid cow and paying him before having received everything. In the meantime I will just have to go there again and again to listen to him saying “Bokra, Inshah’allah”. I have one or two things to say to Allah myself on the matter. Get on with it mate! What do you care if the wicker chairs are making permanent tracks in my butt! Argh.

The decoder situation is also still unresolved. No TV. Zilch. Nada. Rien. Fuck all. You can see, I am in a very benevolent mood. I am calm. Naa, actually, it is quite nice without the box. Although over a week is pushing it a bit. Hey, I am missing way too many of my favourite shows! No can do. Another shop I will have to start harrassing on a permanent basis.

Had a really nice time at home, ate way too much (again), drank lots of Weissbier (Bavarian wheat beer, you guys!), did some serious spring shopping – 3 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of pants, 3 shirts, lots of t-shirts, some tank tops… Now I am set for the hot weather!
Work so far is frantic, on the first day my boss bit my head of and screamed at me, what a nice welcome after the holiday….
My satelite decoder is broken. Had a rather comical conversation with the Showtime technician on the phone last night, all in Arabic!!! He came round tonight, sadly not to repair, but to collect….bugger….so I will be without the tube for a week to ten days. The chance to catch up on my reading. Started a pretty entertaining book this morning…..

In about 7 hours I am leaving for Germany. Back on Monday. 5 days only, but better than nothing and I won’t be back until Christmas. My mum has already planned every second on my stay…. Will now start on my favourite (not) past-time = packing my suitcase. Anyway, it will be a small case with not much in it, I am planning to shop for summer clothes at home… Happy Easter, Happy Eid, whatever…

Working over Easter. It’s not fair. Anyway, there is an Egyptian holiday on the 28th of April. We will work on the 1st of May and instead have 4 days off next week. I will fly home next Friday and come back on Monday. I know, it’s not much and hardly worth it – and it costs a bundle – but I wanted to be home for a bit and see my parents. I would have loved to meet up with them on Crete, but it just didn’t work out.

It is hot. Boiling. And really humid. It shouldn’t be allowed to be humid in Egypt. This is a desert country. It should be dry. And dusty. Nobody said anything about lots of smog and humidity when I moved here. Phewy. And the summer hasn’t even started yet. From too cold to way too hot in 2 days. Quite a record. The mosquitos like it as well. Argh. Been scratching and scratching. Filthy little buggers.
Otherwise not much to say. Keeping loose track of the war. Every morning I have a 5 minute update with CNN and BBC world, just so I have a rough idea what is going on. I don’t really want to know the details anyway. I just want it too end without too many people dying.
Anyway, here I am, hot, sweaty and itchy. What can I say. C’est ca. Off to bed…

The first pretty warm day today. Phew. Last day tomorrow, then it’s weekend. Better. I actually went to bed at a quarter to 10 last night, because I was so knackered. Also went to the British Club for dinner and did not get bombed by enraged fundamentalists. The latest rumour – a bomb at the British consulate in Alexandria. Called the embassy in Cairo to check and it turned out to be a lot of bull. Better still.

And, I see, we are approaching Baghdad….or trying to….I hope this whole godawful mess is over soon….and Bush trips over something…..war on terror, right. The only terror I see at the moment is the one imposed by the USA government. Am I going to get bombs into my mail account now for being unpatriotic? Ok, signing off, before I start getting to polemic. Coco and bed….
...to my weblog. There probably won't be something new every day, but keep coming by and have a look what makes my day (or doesn't....). And if you have any comments, drop me a line in my guestbook!
