Ole Red Eyes puts Ole Blue Eyes in the shade
Sunday Independent
24th Apr 2005

DISGUSTED of Tunbridge Wells was presumably delighted to see Shane MacGowan in town last weekend. The sherry-sipping locals needn't pack up their tweeds and leave just yet.
The hedonistic hellraiser - and Ireland's greatest songwriter, according to Bono - has no plans to move into the area. Shane was merely attending his sister's wedding at the Spa Hotel there. Stunning Siobhan married her long-term boyfriend, Anthony Hayes, in a private ceremony for family and close friends.
Spider Stacey, ex of The Pogues, attended with his girlfriend Louise.
Katell Keineg sang Into My Arms by Nick Cave. Dressed up in a frock-coat, Shane serenaded the bride and groom with Frank Sinatra's I've Been a Rover. Apparently, Ole Red Eyes doing Ole Blue Eyes was something to behold.
Shane's mother Therese made an inspired speech in Irish - may the road rise before you, etc - while the bride herself said that all the people that she loved in the world were in the room "and that means the world to me". They went off on honeymoon to romantic Yorkshire the following morning.
"I normally hate weddings," Shane's muse Victoria Mary Clarke told me,"but I thought it was particularly moving. It was such a real wedding. I cried when Siobhan walked into the actual service."
As doubtless did Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells when he saw Shane arrive in the local tea-room last Friday.

...
they even went onstage an hour late, the flash bulbs and the papparazzi outside made me wait and then they arrived, introduced by a miniture Roy Rogers on acid , the set was short , frenetic and very sweet and then Shane Mac Gowan goes on for the last number, a punked up version of Bobby Darin's 'Beyond the Sea', besides having the Libertines, Kate Moss and Bobby Gillispie in the house it still would have been great...
Molly, posted to The Boogaloo forum

Drowned in Sound:
... The entrance of Shane MacGowan half way through the set seems very apt. Wasted and lolloping, he provides the perfect antidote to the The ‘Bombers, spasmodic fitting.

Shane and his anthem of excess
Between the drugs, the booze and the fighting, it's a wonder that the ex-Pogue is still alive.
John Masterson hails a heroic drunk
Irish Independent

Maybe Victoria has played a role in keeping Shane with us. To say she keeps him on the straight and narrow would be doing the truth a massive disservice, but he would probably enjoy a chat and few pints with her more than any of the other excesses and temptations that abound. There were years of women throwing themselves at him, and fans offering to lend him their girlfriend for the night: "It was one of the first really mad things I noticed, you know, people giving you their girlfriend. I'd never dream of giving anyone my girlfriend. I don't care who the fucker is."                           MORE   >>>

FROM THE MOSHPIT #5:
PETE AND SHANE'S, SECRET ST. PATRICK'S SHOW

Joe Ambrose
"
On March 17th Shane MacGowan was due to play his annual St. Patrick’s Day London show, a kind of popular hogfest strictly for the lowest dregs of the Irish Diaspora. Of late he has, however, been doing interesting low key but high octane performances at The Boogaloo, a north London bar presided over by Gerry O’Boyle, a man I’ve known most of the time I’ve been in London. O’Boyle is an Irish Gatsby who has long specialised in the organisation of beautiful parties involving A-list celebrities and authentic bohemians. I’ve seen several of MacGowan’s covert Boogaloo performances because my pal Carwyn Ellis has been playing there with Shane. The day before St. Patrick’s he rang me to say that MacGowan was doing a Boogaloo show early the following night prior to going transmetropolitan to play for the savages awaiting him in Shepherd’s Bush."                                                 MORE   >>>

Pete Doherty And Shane McGowan In St Patrick's Day Performance

18 Mar 2005

What could quite possibly be the most shambolic double act in music teamed up last night with a St Patrick’s day performance in London.
Pete Doherty and Shane McGowan paired up to perform at north London’s Boogaloo pub, McGowan’s regular haunt these days.

                                                       London, UK, 17 Mar 2005
The Popes were fairly ordinary, but Shane is still special. At one level he looks like a man you would  not be surprised to see on a slab in a morgue, and his performance has a sort of Pogues-juke-box quality about it, but the voice is still surprisingly good and the stage presence is genuinely exciting.  He might be a ruin, but he is still electrifying. I loved it.
A special night.

Shane'n'Pete show
By Ed Harris
Evening Standard
18 March 2005

It was, of course, St Patrick's Day. So what more traditional sight could there be in London than that of Shane MacGowan raising a pint of Guinness and having a singalong?
Bringing this sharply up to date was a younger generation's rock wildman: Pete Doherty, troubled lead singer of Babyshambles.
The pair - seen arm in arm, voices raised in beery song and each clutching a half-drained glass of stout - sent their fans wild with an impromptu performance last night.

Jesus, what a night last night was. Pete Doherty and Shane McGowan playing in front of no more than 150 people.
Started off with Pete, Alan Wass and Dot Allison doing a few Libs and Babyshambles tunes. Then Shane struggled on stage to join them for a few more. Christ knows what sort of state he must have been in by the time he got to SBE! Amazing night. Mick Jones was in attendance, Kate Moss behind the bar.
Misspelt Yoof (originaly reported  at efestivals.co.uk)

Quite amazing they both turned up but as both are poster children for the campaign against substance abuse and they were quite shocking to see in the 'flesh'. Still, Shane and Pete singing Dirty Old Town is one of the best things to see on St. Patrick's Day so a fun time was had by all.

PETE DOHERTY and SHANE MACGOWAN performed together last night to celebrate ST PATRICK’S DAY at a tiny north LONDON venue (March 17).
The pair performed versions of ‘Lost Highway’, The Pogues classic ‘A Pair Of Brown Eyes’, Sam Cooke’s ‘Cupid’ before finishing with a rousing version of Irish classic ‘Dirty Old Town’ at the Boogaloo Bar in Highgate.

....Luckily, Doherty manages to hold a restless crowd’s attention through a selection of Libertines and Babyshambles tracks <...> before ushering onstage Pogues legend Shane McGowan for a ensemble reading of ‘Dirty Old Town’. A charming, captivating and altogether accomplished set from the London police force’s favourite troubadour.

...Out of the corner of The Boogaloo stumbles a Stove-pipe hated Shane McGowan to join Yeti in a rendition of Desmond Dekker's 'Israelites'. Could we hear a word he was singing? No. Did we love it anyway? Of course we bloody did! - Nick Roberts
... Shane McGowan was there again, and sang The Israelites AGAIN, same thing for breakfast indeed. Blatantly it's the only song he can remember. He was more wasted this time, which resulted in a fair bit of laughing at him, and I think perhaps the novelty is wearing off. But I do like his top hat, and it suits him very well in a ruined, gin-soaked gentleman kind of way. - KitMarlowe

Exclusive:Yeti Joined Onstage By Shane McGowan Again!
by Daniel Melia
11 Mar 2005

Yeti were once again joined on stage Wednesday by Pogues legend Shane McGowan during the bands set at the Boogaloo in London.
The band, which has former Libertine John Hassell as their frontman, enjoyed the company of McGowan in an impromptu performance of two of their songs. It’s the second time McGowan has joined the band on stage, the first came during their last performance at Boogaloo at the end of January.

This summer, Shane MacGowan played a low-key gig in North London's Boogaloo bar. After a fivesong set, he shuffled through the crowd. And I, overawed at seeing a legend performing in such close quarters, told him it was great. He laughed and told me not to be stupid, it was just OK.

March 2005

Boozy but poignant seasonal cheer from the most unlikely of festive bands.

ODD THAT, OF ALL GROUPS, The Pogues -they of the bad teeth 24-hour lock-ins and tea-tray headaches - have sidled up alongside Wizzard and Slade as the spirit of Christmas. This is the second of a three-night festive residency at Brixton, like the one they did in 2001. There are bauble-strewn trees either side of the stage and, before the evening is out, fake snow falls down from the rafters as thatsong - let's face it, the greatest Christmas song ever written - is delivered in all its glory.

... Invariably there were phone calls flying around about collaborations and who could play with whom to make it extra special. BP Fallon was involved, and he always loves to suggest songs and "good vibes, man!" How about a duet of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" featuring Ronnie and Shane? Cool. Or "The Irish Rover" with Shane and the Dubliners? Definitely. But who was playing with Shane? There was neither a Pogue nor a Pope to be seen! We got the call - the night before.
