Who Am I? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
My name is Ian Laidlaw, and I am currently a counsellor in Leeds, England, but have lived in Japan for more than 5 years. You can access my blog here. I have been to Japan 4 times: for 11 months on AFS in 1995; on a holiday work visa for 3 months in 1996; to visit the Buraku Liberation League in Osaka and Tokyo for 3 weeks to study the Buraku issue in 2000; and on the JET Programme in Okinawa from 2001-2004. |

Why Have I Created This Page?
I have created this page as a resource base for people who wish to study the Buraku issue, and also to promote awareness of the Buraku issue. I would like to add more information to this page, so if you would like to submit something or suggest a link or anything else that you think would be a good idea then please email me.
Who are the Burakumin? | Why Study the Buraku Issue?
The Burakumin are a Japanese minority group consisting of around 3 million people in about 6,000 communities. Their ancestors were classes as outcastes during the Tokugawa period (1603-1868) due to their occupations. They are still discriminated against today. | The Buraku problem is a very serious human rights issue in Japan. I believe that we should all be making an effort to increase human rights awareness in our global community because a proper understanding of human rights will contribute to the resolution of these kinds of problems.
