"We know what we are, but not what we may be."
-William Shakespeare
Speech people are strange, always have been always will be.  I was strange, and I was in mime!  Of course, everyone thinks I was in mime because I was strange.  But nevertheless, Speech people are strange.

Mime was how I got my start.  It's either a category you hate, or love.  (A Mime is a horrible thing to waste.)  After going solo as a sophomore, I said I'd never do mime again.  I was wrong.  When I was a junior, we lost one of the best speech coaches Carroll High ever had, Yvonne Fielder.  Even though we did have five individuals step in to coach, it was up to the speech students to be the leaders.
I wrote mime pieces, cretiqued, made their poasters, and was even in a group myself.  I coached a group all the way to all state (as performers) and made it to all state that year myself in an Ensemble Acting piece with Nathan Proctor.  The piece was called "Forgotten Memories" and it was written by our coach, Mr. David W. Faris.  I played a woman obsessed with the theatrical world, and Nathan was "Jack," my embarassed son.  Our not-so-typical lives were comical, but in the end, just as dramatic as the plays I acted out throughout the piece.

All State Ensemble Acting
I loved doing Ensemble Acting, but I wasn't fortunite enough to do it my senior year.  Instead, I was in Improvisational Acting, coaching mimes full time, and carried the lead role of Alice in our One Act Play, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  It was hard to balance the load, along with other activities and being very sick at the same time.  I didn't make it to all state in Large Group that year, ut IEs didn't disappoint me...

For Indivitual Events (IEs), in the past I had done Original Oratory, Acting, and my specialty, Expository Address.  My senior year I did both Expos. and Acting.  My acting piece was about me, my dad, and the guys I've gone out with.  But chosing the subject of my Expos wasn't as easy.  In the past, I had done Monopoly and the Peanuts.  I wanted to do the outhouse, but I decided on Duct Tape because it was more school appropriate.  But I had a lot of fun with it...a little too much fun with it.  I had a rubber duck, "Lucky Duck," which was my good luck charm.  Not only did that duck get me to all state, it also got me a date for prom!

All State Expository Address 2002
It was a little depressing to be one of only three all staters from Carroll High that spring, when we usually send at leaxt ten to all state and bring home the traveling trophy for the most entries.  But it was still fun, and a great experience.  I'm really going to miss my moments in the spotlight.
