| The Berkeleys owned Caludon through the marriage of Isobel Mowbray to Lord William Berkeley she inherited the Mowbray estate with her sister Margaret on the death of Anne Mowbray. All of the Mowbray estate had been broken up and given out to various people by William Berkeley in return for Titles and Honours, and Maurice Berkeley had to sue for the return of the estates. Caludon had fallen into disrepair following the death of Thomas Mowbray in exile. The Castle was rebuilt by Henry 17th Lord Berkeley and Queen Elizabeth I became Godmother to his son Thomas who was born there. |
