| The Berkeley's who were engaged in a long running dispute with the Talbot's inherited rightful ownership through the marriage of the only surviving heir Isobel Mowbray to James Berkeley. The castle had passed to the Talbots either via the marriage of Elizabeth Talbot to John De Mowbray or as a gift from the newly crowned king Henry in return for Talbot's support against Richard III. The last of the Mowbrays was Anne, married (aged 6) to Prince Richard and with anne's death (Plague) the estates went to her Aunt Margaret Howard (nee Mowbray) and through the Howards to the Talbots Caludon was returned to the Berkeley's in 1494 with the third marriage of James Berkeley to Jane Talbot in an attempt to resolve the feud. |
