The Cliffords |
Owners of Caludon Castle 1710 - 1815 |
The Clifford family took possession of Caludon in 1710 on the death of Sir John Preston when Anne Preston inherited the castle. Anne had married Hugh Clifford Lord of Chudleigh in 1673. The Cliffords were instrumental in it's final demise when they took stone from the castle to build a house and outbuildings adjacent to the site. The Cliffords sold Caludon piecemeal in 1815. The final outbuildings were torn down by Coventry City Council in the late seventies/early eighties. Clifford bridge road leads from Binley to Walsgrave alongside the edge of Wyken and leads to Clifford bridge where the A4600 (old A46) crosses the river Sowe by Walsgrave hospital. The Clifford Park housing estate also took it's name from the Clifford's of Caludon. |
