| The first owner of Caludon castle was Hugh D'Avranches and on the death of his son and daughter in law (shipwrecked) the castle passed to the Chesters via Hugh's sister Margaret to her son Ranulf III. The castle was built shortly after the Norman conquest as William the conqueror consolidated his position building castles around the country and stocking them with trusted Norman Knights. Hugh D'Avranches is believed to have accompanied William on his conquest of Britain in 1066. |
