This was a leisurely trip in the spring of 1999 from Alberta across the Rockies into British Columbia and down the Coquihalla freeway to the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland. Then it was across the friendly border into the USA and Washington.  I headed to the coast as quickly as possible, taking the smallest roads I could find in order to stay close to the coast.  It was a refreshing experience.
These are the "sheds" on the Roger's Pass.  They protect the road from the inevitable winter avalanches.
It's a very pretty drive and sometimes I just can not resist the impulse to snap a picture through the front windshield.
The railway line often parallels the highway.  Near Revelstoke, B.C., a train tunnel through the rock can be seen on the other side of the river.
The Coquihalla Freeway is a high mountain freeway which begins in a desert environment at Kamloops, B.C. Part of it, beginning at Merritt, B.C.,  is a toll road with a $10.00 fee.  There was lots of snow at one of the roadside rest areas.
The Coquihalla ends at Hope, B.C. and marks the approach to the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland of B.C. near Vancouver. It also marks the beginning of much greenery which always amazes a prairie boy.... in early May? So, I wonder why I don't live here. And soon we'll be heading south into the USA.
