Long Beach Peninsula is a beautiful spot in the southwest corner of Washington. There are state parks at each end of the peninsula. I walked out for a couple of miles in Leadbetter Point State Park on the north end. The mass of red blossoms on this shrub caught my eye. |

I have never seen people drive on the beach before. It tickled and intrigued me. I was worried about getting stuck in the high dunes at the edge of the beach. A passing woman assured me that if that happened the locals would appear to help me out. That was all I needed. Over the dunes and down onto the beach I go. |

Fort Canby State Park is on the south end of Long Beach Peninsula. The beach and surf is a great place for a bit of serenity. |

I am startled to find this bunker overlooking the ocean and flanked by a gun emplacement at each end. I imagine the fear resulting from Pearl Harbour and which brings about this construction. |
It is remarkable to be jolted into awareness of war in the midst of such beauty. I can see ghastly newsreel footage of beach landings as I look out from the bunker. |
