| Reincarnation |
| There was a man who was born into a very poor family. He worked hard all his life and eventually amassed a very great fortune. However, he was by then too old, too set in his ways, and too sick to enjoy his wealth. So this clever man reincarnated as his own grandson, inherited the family fortune, and promptly spent it all, living the high life on the money he had once worked so hard to acquire. Your experience today, and in your past lives and your future lives flows out from what you are projecting from your innermost psyche, your personality, your hopes and dreams, your imaginings, your fears, your guilts, your beliefs, your desires and attachments and your strong emotions. In one life you cannot possibly fulfil all of your potentials, and so you have the opportunity to live as many lives as you want. Each life, then, is a wonderful opportunity, a time in which you take on a personality so unique that there will never be any other person exactly like you; then you impress your unique reality into the universe, and the entire universe is a different place because you exist. Your experiences in every day are precious. There are many aspects of each life which are only to be found in that particular time and place. It is important if you like something about your world, your society, that you make the most of it, for it may not exist in any of your other lifetimes. For example, if you love computers, it is easy to recognise that they were not available in the past, and will one day disappear again, so enjoy them while you can. Underlying every life, however, is a grand, heroic theme, to do with the finding, following and expressing of eternal values, such as love, divinity, creativity, cooperation, wisdom and spiritual development. If there is ever a conflict in your life, and a choice to be made between immediate gain and an eternal value, you would do well to choose the eternal value! Remembering your past lives is hardly essential, for the most important thing is to live the life you are in now, as fully and beneficially as possible, and many people do exactly that without ever thinking of their other lives. However if you do remember your other lives, they add depth, knowledge, and richness to your current experiences. If you are a woman, for example, and you remember being a man in other lives, or vice versa, then it will be harder for you to carry prejudices against the opposite gender. If you remember lives in other cultures and religions, then you will automatically be more understanding of these differences. If you now struggle with relationship issues, the chances are very high that you have other lives in which you do rather well in these areas, and knowing about those successes can help you do better now. There are many important times in each person's life which can be quite daunting, such as leaving home, or starting a family, and at these times, knowing that you have successfully been through these experiences many times before, in other lives, can be highly supportive. It is possible to remember a past life, as you remember your childhood, with events in which you are a different personality, but it is also possible in meditation states to meet one of your past life selves face to face, and have a conversation with them, for even though you came from that source, that past life self still exists in simultaneous time, and has other experiences than those you remember. Our teaching on reincarnation differs from some others because we know that time is basically simultaneous, and filled with probabilities, so that neither the future nor the past is 'set in concrete', but both are flexible, and can, with the appropriate effort, be changed. We also know that the concept of karma is not fundamentally true; you will not be punished or rewarded in future lives for what you are doing now, since that life and this one both exist at the same time, and only appear to be lived one after the other. You are basically a being of spirit, who takes on human lives to satisfy profound, valuable and important purposes of your own. You may meet people you like, and people you dislike. You may have satisfying experiences, and dreadful experiences. You may rush into a life without proper preparation, and find you made a big mistake. You may try to achieve ideals which keep falling flat, to your great frustration. You may become overwhelmed by an overload of chores, or have your time consumed by the need to make a living. At such times it can be difficult to appreciate the magnificence of being human. However your immortal, indomitable divinity will not only get you through everything, but will give you 'treasure for dirt', 'beauty for ashes', and you will one day look back on all your human lives as a very precious, important and often delightful episode of your existence. More than half the world's population believes in reincarnation. There is plenty of evidence for reincarnation, perhaps the most convincing, for the sceptical person, are the well documented stories of children who begin describing at an early age, as soon as they can talk, the home and people, by address and name, who were known to them in their immediately previous life, and when those children are taken to those remembered places, they can recognise their previous family and friends, and speak with them of their involvement with them in the past.
