Geri Halliwell ginger spice |

Well what do we say about Ms Halliwell, eh? Often noted as being the "spice" behind the Spice Girls, and, along with Melanie B, the unofficial leader, Geri Halliwell did the unthinkable in May 1998 and abruptly left the group without any warning before the girls embarked on their North American Tour giving the others only 48 hours to revamp the show! She later apologised in her book "If Only" for leaving the way she did but still holds no regrets. Relations between her and the rest of the girls have never been the same again. Geri is NOT known for her voice however I find it to be a great Pop voice. More attitude than aptitude it suits the songs she sings and was featured prominently in the Spice Girls songs (her's along with Melanie B's are the voices you hear yelling "I'll tell you what I want what I really really want" in the classic Wannabe). Geri was also the main lyricist of the group. You can actually tell the difference between the "Forever" album on which Geri did not appear and the first two Spice Girls albums. She was also known as the "talker" of the group often leading conversations in interviews. She had a keen sense of the marketability of the Spice Girls and worked it to full tilt. Her Union Jack dress at the 1997 Brit Awards caused a sensation--soon the Union Jack was a fashion trend once again as it was in the "80's . Geri was also the one who coined the term "Girl Power" which of course was the Spice Girl's trademark and motto. After leaving the Spice Girls Geri buried her "Ginger" persona with a 180 degree "make under". Gone were the platforms and OTT make up and hair replaced by a thinner, sleaker Geri (see pic above). Musically she went on to have a successful solo career with 3 number one UK hits and two solo albums (Schizophonic andScream If You Wanna Go Faster). After "If Only" she released a follow up autobiography titled "For the Record". She is currently attempting a career in the US and is living in L.A. Her cover version of "It's Raining Men" was a huge hit in Canada. Her new "sugar free" body however was met with mixed reviews! Favourite line from Spice World: "Haven't you heard of compromisation?" |
