Peters Exhaust Pipe Pics

Here are the rear sections of the 3" dia. mandrel bent pipes from Torque Tech.  The smaller pipes are 2 1/4" dia. pipes (notice the kinked, no mandrel bends) from J.C. Whitney.  The small pipes fit was good but needed to be extended on the front pipes to clear the cross member before turning toward the drive shaft.  This was the case with the Torque Tech exhaust also but they make longer pipes for just this purpose.

Here is the new front pipes from the Torque Tech system.  The shorter ones are the standard length head pipes supplied and the longer ones are the HL head pipes.  The standard length pipes were too short by about 4".  In there catalog it states the Pontiac LeMans/GTO with headman headers may require the HL kit.  This was never mentioned when ordering and when explained, the new pipes were sent immediately with no shipping charges (great customer service).

If you are ordering a kit, order the HL head pipes, it added a whopping $12 to the kit and its always easier to just cut a pipe than it is to make it longer.

Rear End Here is a shot of the rear pipes installed over the rear.  The pipes come close to the tank pinch weld (about 1/4") and also to the top control arms.  It still allows movement without touching and are tucked up as far as I could get them.

You can also just see the stainless steel strap bands I used instead of clamps.  These are great and can be loosened and the pipes slide apart at any time (barring rust).  They also seal the pipe all the way around without crimping.  They are a little more but I think they are worth it.

As you can see, I also have airbags installed with separate airlines.  This was trying to defeat the wheel hop problem that I was having before I installed the Polygraphite bushings but didn't help much.  The bushings were an instant improvement and worked great while stiffening the rear suspension up a bit.

While putting the exhaust on I noticed a rear axle seal leaking all over the brakes.  I had previously installed an axle-saver bearing/seal that moves the bearing out to ride on a clean machined surface.  I had to have a puller to remove the old seal but this was rented for free from Auto Zone with the purchase of a new bearing/seal.

The exhaust now consists of 3" mandrel bent HL exhaust system from Torque Tech and a pair of 3" Flowmaster 40 series (two chamber) Delta Flow mufflers.

The result is well, quite awesome.  These pipes and mufflers are NOT for the street sleepers.  There is a definite rap out the back with some slight interior resonance (Delta Flow is supposed to give less interior resonance with better scavenging).  Cruise sound lets everyone aware that you have a healthy V8, but if your heavy on that right pedal then it gets real nasty and barks out loud and authoritatively.

I would recommend the 50 series Delta Flows for anyone not wanting a loud ride.  The 3" pipes don't help the noise suppression a bit either, but look great coming out from the bumper.  Seriously I have gotten used to it and don't think its that loud anymore.  I have, however, set off car alarms and scared the crap out a little girl behind the counter at a Burger King (I couldn't hear her).
