First Generation - Nathan Maddox/Mattox
son of John Maddox, grandson of John Maddox
Nathan Mattox was married to Prudence Bozman (Vorsman) on June 17, 1769 in Maryland or Virginia. Prudence Bozman (Vorsman) was born about 1745 in England. She died about 1845 in Readsville, Callaway County, Missouri-northeast of Jefferson City. She was buried in Didley Kemp private cemetery in Missouri. Nathan's wife  is confirmed in the History of Blackford County (1987) page 229 and also in a records search at the family history library in Utah.

Nathan Mattox and Prudence Bozman Vorsman had the following children:
1)
Michael Maddox
2)
Margaret (Peggy) V.  Mattox
3)
Rebecca Mattox
4)
Gabriel Mattox
5)
Sarah Prudence Mattox
6)
David Mattox
7)
John Mattox
8)
Wesley Maddox
**note: Margaret (Peggy)  V. Mattox and Sarah Prudence Mattox married Robert and Jordan Kemp. They were brothers.
The debate continues. Was the family name Maddox or Mattox?
In my correspondence with B.B. Cavender of  Florida who is decended from TWO of Nathan's children  (Rebecca and Gabriel),  Cavender has in  possession two old handwritten documents (copies from the Franklin County, VA courthouse) that read as follows:

" I have agreed for Joseph Bolling to intermarry with my Daughter Rebecca...you plan to join a License for that purpose. Given and in my hand and seal this twelveth day of March 1796.
Nathan Maddox (seal)
W. James Calloway
Clerk of Franklin Court
Witnesses:
Abram Dehaven
Jordan Kemp

Nathan signed his surname Maddox. Another copy of a handwritten note signed by Joseph Bolling, being the bond, spells Rebecca's surname as Maddox.

The mystery continues....was the original spelling of our name Maddox...or Mattox?
The following information comes from various researchers  on the Maddox/Mattox family.

According to B.B. Cavender here are the origins of Nathan Maddox:
"Nathan Maddox Sr was born about 1743 in England (Source: Born, c. 1743 in Ireland per Barbara I. Ferrell Mullen.), and died in 1820 in Franklin Co., VA. He married PRUDENCE BOUSMAN June 17, 1769 in Bedford Co., VA.
It was also stated in the Cavender research that....
"Different researchers have recorded different counties of origin for Nathan Maddox. England, Wales and Ireland have beed reported. Also one researcher has him buried near Union Hall, Virginia, while another reports him buried near Leesville, Virginia. These two towns, although in different counties, are only a few miles apart which indicates the same general area."

"Nathan Maddox came from Wales in 1750 or a little later.
The Raney Collection, page 2507, says he came from England. He married Prudence Bousman. She came from England. They lived in Franklin Co., Va. and were buried near Union Hall. One daughter married a McCraw."

"Nathan Maddox came from Ireland in the 1700's. Nathan Mattox died and was buried in Bedford Co., VA near Fairview Church between Church and Leesville, VA. Nathan Maddox and Margaret Versman or (Vuzman) were married June 17, 1769. (Page 24234 of the
Mann Collection)

B.B. Cavender has collected the following information on Prudence Bousman:
"Of Prudence, "the English weaver girl", family legend has it that she won a considerable prize in Britain for her skill as a weaver, but that later she was judged at least partially to blame for "the fire at the weaver's house" and was exiled to the colonies. While at sea she became betrothed to a fellow passenger, but during a storm at sea this gentleman was lost overboard and Prudence was obliged to wait one year in the States before marrying. We have no date. Prudence lived to be about 100, and records indicate she died in Readsville, Nissourri, where a son had taken her." (Source: W. Morrison Mattox, 63 Elkins Lake, Huntsville TX 77340 in Feb. 1988 updated 10/5/90 by Eugene Mattox Baird, 1504 Grandview Road, Martinsville VA 24112, tel. 703/638/1062-check area code-as found in the Franklin Co. Library, E. Court St., Rocky Mount, VA 24151)
Her surname has also been reported as Bozman and Vorsman and a few other variations. The surname Bousman was prevalent in this area of Virginia and still is. Bosman used in old letters dated from the 1890's collected by
William Hedrick Maddox."

Dorothy Belle Brooks Cavender, mother of Beverley Brooks Cavender, is a descendant of two of Nathan's children, daughter Rebecca and son Gabriel, both being 3rd-Great-Grandparents.
Nathan Mattox was born about 1742 in Viginia.
He died after 1828 in Oiss, Franklin county in western Virginia. Franklin county borders on Bedford county and is seperated by Smith Mountain Lake. His place of burial is unknown. Nathan was a farmer.
Much of the Nathan Maddox lineage begins with "Old Dominion"...the great state of Virginia.

There are four counties in Virginia which are reported to be associated with Nathan Maddox.
1) Loudon County-extreme northern part of the state
2) Culpepper County- to the south and west of Loudon County
3) Franklin County-southwest neighbor to Bedford County
4) Bedford County
Notes on Nathan Maddox:

* Most of Nathan's lineage back has been pieced together- mostly old family stories and letters.
* Marriage date is taken from an unsigned and undated message recieved from Wm. R. Mattox of Durham, NC in 1973.
* No actual record for the marriage date has been found.
* The same message says Nathan was buried in Bedford County, VA, near Fairview Church between Church and Leesville, VA.
* All other records say on his farm in Franklin County, VA.
* Prudence may have been Margaret Prudence Bosman/Bozman. Bosman used in old letters dated from 1890's.
*Prudence was said to be 100 years old at the time of her death

"Nathan Mattox Family", mss. by William Hedrick Maddox, 1946. unpubl.
The very knowledgable Harold Maddox disputes the above information and makes his case in this note dated Feb. '03.
Bryon,
Cemetery inscription for Gabriel Mattox does not have a V. for middle initial, Louise did not place a V. in the inscription May 29, 1973. Needs to be corrected. The only child of Nathan and Prudence I know of with the initial "V" is Margaret V. Mattox.
"The Tyree Tree" by Dorothy Chambers Watts. The Cavender list you show on Nathan Mattox and Prudence Bosman/vosman etc. Michael,Gabriel, Wesley,Rebecca,Margaret V.,Sarah Prudence, David & John Are the only children that have been proven. The others are names that were grandchildren and great grand children. None of the dates match those grand and great grandchildren. The William Maddox shown is my direct line and I know he is not a child of Nathan. The Samuel that is shown was probably the child of John of Faquier county. Wilson was probably a son of the Wilson Maddox in Kentucky.
That list of names has been going around for at least 100 years.  Thanks, Harold J. Maddox

Due to recent discoveries in the Worldwide Maddox DNA Project, we know that Nathan descended from John Maddox, b- 1667 of Goochland County, Virginia. Because we cannot positively say HOW Nathan descended from John, I will continue to designate Nathan as "first generation" on this site.
