The most useful artefact found in relation to Sumer and the city of Ur is the ‘Standard of Ur’. The ‘Standard’ was discovered by Leonard Woolley during his excavation of Ur.
The importance of the Standard is that it graphically displays many aspects of life in Ur. One side depicts the peaceful side of life, the other warfare.
The Standard shows the cities’ ruler, musicians, sheep as sacrificial animals, domestic cattle, fish preserved in salt, chariots used in war, soldiers with their helmets, spears, axes and daggers taking prisoners to slavery. It is a very important artifact because of it’s broad coverage of life.
