Acid Free - This means the paper has been treated to neutralize the acids that are found in wood pulp.  The acid can react with the chemicals used in processing photos and can cause early deterioration of the photos.  Acid free is both neutral and stable

Alkaline - Look for supplies that have low alkaline.  You want products to be pH neutral and stable so the pH levels don't fluctuate.

Buffered or alkaline paper - This paper is treated with calcium carbonate to deter acid especially from finger prints or highly acidic material such as newpaper.

Lignin-free paper - This means the paper has gone trhough a process to eliminate the majoirty of the acidic wood pulp called lignin.  Papper that is both acid-free and lignin-free is the highest quality and can last for over 200 years.

Inert Plastics - Inert plastics are pH neutral and stable making them safe for photos.  A few examples are Mylar polyester ( a favourite), polypropylene, and polyethylene.  An easy way to test the safety of a plastic is to smell it.  A strong order like that of vinyl is not safe for photos.

Magnetic albums - Magnetic albums are the album with the sticky pages and clear sheet that lays on top.  The pages are made from PVC plastic which will dull, fade, yellow and ultimately destroy your photographs.  If you have your photos in a book like this, take them out now!  Even if they look fine to you now, they will eventually be damaged.  My baby photos are fine, but my husband's have yellowed.  You never know.  Why take the chance?
