| The first scrapbooks - The first scrapbooks came with the first photographs Autograph books - Blank paged books filled with photos where family and friends would write little inscriptions 1860 - Speciality albums help carte-de-visite or visiting cards which were card backed photographs of celebrities or famous places. These albums also held cabinet cards which were slightly bigger. Before paper photos - Daguerreotypes which were "images printed on a silver or silver-plated copper plate" - These little images fit into miniature leather cases which could be the beginning of photo albums The first photo albums - The first photo albums had insets for carte-de-visite and cabinet cards. They were ornate with leather covers. They were very much like the family bible. - In the late 1800's different material such as velvet began to be used. Early 20th century - Albums began to take on a more personal role. - Albums had pages of pale grey or green at first and around 1903 the pages most commonly used were black. - Titles for the photos were written in white and photos were attached by photo corners. Victorian Era - Very colourful paper became available and was referred to as "scraps" and was used to make annoucements, invitations, cards and such. Because of the beautiful colours and pretty scenes, Ladies used to keep these momentos or scraps and this is where the term "scrapbook" began. Victorian era until 1950's - Black pages commonly used - Photo managerie; no theme After WWII - Themed scrapbooks became popular 2000 until present - Scrapbooking supplies sold in craft stores, the internet and at speciality stores. - Groups getting together to scrapbook is analogous to quilting bees of long ago. |
