Babe

Babe is a charming and lonely little pig who is trying to find his niche in the farm as something other than dinner.  He takes up sheep-herding and the farmer enters him into the world sheepdog herding championship. The animation is spectacular; it really seems as if the animals are talking and interacting! Based on the book, "The Sheep-Pig."  Rated G.

Baby Boom

Diane Keaton portrays an advertising executive who inherits a baby from a distance relative and loses the edge on her career.  Delightful if you are not in the mood for a serious story.  It does touch upon the Supermom syndrome and the yuppie approach to child-rearing, but nothing too heavy.  Kids will enjoy this film as much as you do!

Back to the Future

Back to the Future, Part II

Back to the Future, Part III

Hilarious trilogy that follows Marty, a teen in 1985, into the past to 1955 to make sure his parents fall in love, into the future to 2015 to save his children, and into the past to 1885 to save the scientist that created the time-travelling machine.  The plot is complicated but fun, and all three stories are equalling intriguing.  All are rated PG.

Balto

Based on the true story of a sled dog/wolf that risks its own life to bring life-saving medicine to Nome, Alaska.  The dog's love of a sick little girl is brought into the animated version along with a battle against another sled dog.  Rated G.

Bambi

Disney classic telling the harsh truth of life in the forest of a deer and his forest friends.  Expect to wipe a few tears and answer a lot of questions about Bambi's mother.  Thumper the rabbit is delightful and the animation is truly a work of art.  Rated G.

Barney's Great Adventure

The big purple dinosaur is in his first full-length feature film.  Children under 5 might like to watch this movie, but I doubt if anyone else will.  The plot is almost a self-affirmation for Barney trying to convince older children he is cool and real.  Rated G.

Batman

The Caped Crusader is trying to save Gotham City from the Joker.  Jack Nicholson shines as the Joker and Keaton does a great job as the superhero.  Rated PG-13.
****

Batman Returns

Keaton returns as the Caped Crusader, this time saving Gotham City from the Penguin and Catwoman.  Not as good as the first one; watch it if you or your kids are die-hard Batman fans.  Otherwise, it can be skipped.  Rated PG-13.
*

Batman Forever

Val Kilmer takes the place of Keaton as the Caped Crusader, fighting the Riddler(Jim Carrey) and Two Face(Tommy Lee Jones).  Chris O'Donnell joins the cast as Robin, but the villains still take the cake in this film; sorry Val.  Much better than the previous sequel!  Rated PG-13.

Batman & Robin

The cast of characters increases in favor of the good guys in this sequel-maybe they are trying to steal the limelight from the villains?  Batgirl joins Batman(George Clooney this time) and Robin, fighting Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy.  Add some special effects and that's the movie. Beware-I understand there are plans for a fifth Batman movie.  Holy film-makers, Batman, when will they stop?  Rated PG-13.

Beaches

Chance meeting of two girls on the beach leads to a lifetime of friendship for two women, one a blue-blooded attorney, the other a singer/actress.  Their friendship is tested by time, distance, and men, but the ultimate test comes when one learns she has a terminal illness.  Keep a box of tissues nearby!  Rated PG-13, for language.

Beauty and the Beast

This romantic tale has no down side.  The characters are charming, the animation is flawless, the plot is interesting, and the music is delightful.  There is something for everyone! Rated G.

Bed of Roses

Sweet romance about a workaholic who receives a beautiful bouquet of flowers from an anonymous person.  She tracks down the sender, and he admits he sent them because he saw her crying in her apartment window one night and thought he could cheer her up.  They both have difficult pasts to overcome to have a successful relationship, and they are both forced to reckon with that by the end of the movie.  Rated PG.

Beetlejuice

Great family movie-kids and parents will love it alike.  Michael Keaton is cursed spirit who helps the dead haunt the living, calling himself a bioexorcist.  Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are killed in a car accident and find themselves trapped in their dream home; unfortunately it was purchased by an artist and her family and she is destroying everything they built together.  Hilarious!  Rated PG.

Better Off Dead

This movie was my first encounter with John Cusack, and he does a fabulous job in his role as the teen who is so bummed out about losing his girlfriend that he wants to end it all.  Eventually he determines that by beating his ex-girlfriend's new beau, he can win her back; but by then, does he really want her back?  The subplot of the French exchange student next door is hysterical; and who can forget, "I want my $2.00!!!!"  Rated PG, only recommended for children who will understand the black comedy about suicide.

Beverly Hillbillies, The

Full-length feature film of the long-running television show.  The actors give phenomenal performances as the characters, and the plot is very contrived.  Lots of fun, though!  Rated PG.

Borrowers, The

Adaptation of Mary Norton's books of the same name.  John Goodman is a great villain and the special effects are very realistic.  Kids will really get into it and speculate about where things go when we can't find them.  Growing up with an Irish great-grandmother who believed in the little people, I enjoy letting children follow stories like this one.  Rated PG.

Borrowers, The

The Brady family of the 70's shows up in the 90's, but they are still stuck in the 70's!  A riot for those of us who grew up watching the Brady Bunch.  The best part is Jan's "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia," it is right on.  I also loved when Marcia set up the school dance with Davy Jones as the singer, and the teachers were all swooning.  My kids liked it, but they like to watch the Brady Bunch on TVLand.  Rated PG-13.

Brewster's Millions

Richard Pryor plays a minor league baseball player who inherits $300 million, the catch is he has to spend $30 million in 30 days to collect; and he can't have anything to show for it.  Adaptation of a 1902 novel.  Cute story and Pryor does a great job.  Rated PG.

Read the classic Brewster's Millions
Bug's Life, A

Wonderfully computer-animated story about an ant that dared to be different.  Unfortunately he is also very clumsy and creates a lot of havoc for the other ants.  They decide to send him on an impossible mission just to get rid of him, but he returns with a band of misfit circus performers he thinks are warriors to save the colony from grasshoppers.  Don't miss this one!  Rated G.
