Dances with Wolves

Kevin Costner's first directorial attempt, Dances With Wolves is the story of a soldier who goes west to support a fort in Indian country.  When the soldier arrives, he finds the fort deserted and no signs of the soldiers.  Eventually he does find other people, a Lakota Sioux tribe that he befriends and learns to communicate with.  By the time other soldiers arrive the original soldier has become one of the tribe and must fight the white soldiers.  An excellent, if long, story.  Rated PG-13.

D.A.R.Y.L.

A little boy is found by an elderly couple and brought to social services.  He is placed in a foster home with a very caring couple who adore this very helpful and polite little boy who has no memory of his family or his past.  Then one day his past comes and finds him in a very formal and reserved couple.  They take him home-to the lab they designed him in for the government.  He is Daryl, which is actually D.A.R.Y.L. which is an acronym for a computer brain and a cloned body.  Kids will really like this movie.  Rated PG.

Days of Thunder

Car racing enthusiasts will like this movie a lot, the rest of us have to endure some of the dull and ego-centric Cruise parts.  Nicole Kidman as a neurosurgeon is not believable, especially when she dates her patient.  Robert Duvall was very good.  Rated PG-13.

Dead Poets Society

Robin Williams is superb as the unorthodox English teacher at an all boys prep school in the 1950's.  He is actually a supporting role to many up and coming actors like Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard.  It addresses many issues facing adolescents; like becoming independent, finding a niche in society, and standing up for your beliefs.  Not a good movie for young children.  Teen-agers and adults will enjoy this serious drama.  Rated PG.

Deceived

Goldie Hawn portrays a woman with the perfect life:  a great husband, sweet daughter, fulfilling job; then her husband dies in a car accident, and she learns that her marriage was a lie.  Great thriller!  Rated PG-13.

Defending Your Life

This is one of my all-time favorite movies.  It answers the question, What happens to us when we die?  In this movie, we go to court and defend our life and our decisions.  If we faced life without fear, we get to move on in the universe; otherwise it's back to earth for another round.  Rated PG.

Delirious

Not a great movie, but if you like John Candy it is a little enjoyable. John Candy is the romantic lead in a soap opera and when he is hit on the head, he dreams his life is in the show.  The course of events changes his outlook when he really wakes up.  Rated PG.

Dirty Dancing

Rich girl, Baby, goes on vacation with her parents and falls for a poor dance instructor.  Her parents disapprove of the dancer because they think he is responsible for another dancer's pregnancy.  Romantic premise and a lot of great dancing.  Rated PG-13.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

A battle ensues when a con-man works in another con-man's territory.  The plot is ridiculous and the skits are mostly stupid.  The ending is the only part of the movie that was good.  If you are a die-hard Steve Martin fan, watch it, if not, don't waste your time.  Rated PG-13.

****

Dr. Dolittle

Eddie Murphy portrays the famous doctor that can talk to the animals and hear them, humorously updated for the 1990's.  The language and sexual inference should have been toned down a little.  Rated PG-13.
