Gandhi

The biography of Mahatma Gandhi and his amazing life.  He made a miraculous transition from a wealthy lawyer to a spiritual leader in oppressed India.  Won eight Oscars, including Best Actor (Ben Kingsley), Best Film, and Best Director (RIchard Attenborough).  Very long film-too long and serious for many children-teenagers should enjoy it.  Rated PG

George of the Jungle

Hilarious tale based on the 60's cartoon hero spoof of Tarzan.  Brendan Frasier proves he is adept at physical comedy and leaves you rolling when he tries to get Ursala to be his mate by making faces and throwing leaves as advised by his "brother" Ape.  Ape is voiced by John Cleese who is funny as always.  The narration is good and the dialogue is funny.  Some gross humor that kids will just adore (like the elephant urinating on the bad guys).  Rated PG.

Ghost

Romantic thriller about a murdered investment consultant who tries to protect his lover when he learns he was murdered in an attempt to get his access codes for his computer.  He enlists the help of a medium who is stunned to learn she does have supernatural powers.  Rated PG-13.

Ghostbusters

Comedy about a group of paranormal scientists who lose their university funding and join the private sector as ghost busters.  Everything is great until they learn that an ancient spirit is coming to New York City.  Add a local city official who runs them out of business and they have to work together to save the city.  Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, and Annie Potts star in this funny movie.  Rated PG.

Ghostbusters II

Almost all of the original characters return for the sequel to Ghostbusters.  After being shut down by the city, the Ghostbusters are reduced to entertaining at birthday parties to make money.  They open their shop back up when they discover a river of slime running under the city.  Exciting special effects, including the Statue of Liberty roaming through New York City.  Rated PG.

Gods Must Be Crazy, The

Gods Must Be Crazy II, The

When a tribesman in the African bush finds a discarded Coke bottle, he endures trials to return it to the gods, the most troublesome being civilization.  Similar vein in the sequel, but not as funny.  Both are rated PG.

Godzilla

Do me a favor and don't waste your time or money on this film.  Bad plot, sad story, and Jurassic Park feel.  Matthew Broderick is one of my favorite actors, and I was disappointed I could not enjoy his performance.  The worst part of the movie is that it is set up for a sequel.  I hope someone talks them out of it!  Rated PG-13.

Gone with the Wind

One of the best films (and books) ever!  Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable have on screen chemistry like nothing I have ever seen before.  Story of a southern belle who wants to marry her neighbor, but he is marrying his cousin.  The Civil War tears their world apart, and the belle learns to survive however she can, while protecting the man she love's wife.  She decides that money is the most important thing in the world, and is very unfashionable in her pursuit of wealth and finally marries a rogue who has loved her for years.  Not rated, may be too long and intense for small children.

Good Burger

Nickelodeon stars Keenan and Kel pair up for the big screen as workers in a fast food establishment that try to save it from ruin when a large glamorous chain moves into town.  A lot of physical comedy by Kel that kids will love.  Rated PG.

Goonies, The

Comedy thriller about a group of young teens so desperate to save their group and their parents that they set out on a treasure hunt.  Diverse characters, funny dialogue, and interesting settings.  Rated PG.

Grease

Musical based on the Broadway smash about a 1950's high school and a couple of opposites that are in love.  Great music!  The one thing I really did not like was that all of the actors were way too old to play high school kids. Rated PG.

Great Mouse Detective, The

Animated tale of a Sherlock Holmes type mouse; based on the book by Eve Titus, "Basil of Baker Street."  A little girl mouse goes to Basil for help when her father is held captive by the bad guys who want him to make a toy that resembles the queen so they can take over England.  Rated G.

Great Outdoors

John Candy and Dan Akroyd pair up for the tale of a family whose vacation is ruined when their big shot relatives show up.  Has all the classic elements of a comedy:  the buddy concept, the summer romance, the weird locals, etc.  Throw in a giant bear and a huge steak and that is the movie.  I liked it a lot more than the critics did!  Rated PG.

Gross Anatomy

Movie about the problems facing medical students.  Includes Matthew Modine who portrays a brilliant med student lacking the enthusiasm or energy to be successful and a terminally ill professor intent on his success.  Rated PG-13.

Groundhog Day

This is one of my favorite movies ever!  Bill Murray is a weatherman who is burned out by his job and resents going to Punxatawney, PA to cover the annual groundhog festival.  He finds himself trapped in the day and doomed to live the same day over and over and over.  He even kills himself to escape the dreaded day, but he keeps coming back!  Then he figures out that he should take advantage of this and be the best person he can be.  Hilarious situations, great characters, and a very funny story.  Rated PG-13

Grumpy Old Men

Grumpier Old Men

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau star as old friends and enemies who fight over the new woman in town, Ann-Margret.  Snide remarks and ice fishing make the original enjoyable.  The sequel is equally funny, adding Sophia Loren as another new woman in town, but she makes their favorite bait shop into a restaurant!  Both are rated PG-13.

Guarding Tess

A buddy comedy about a Secret Service agent who is looking forward to a new detail when the President gives him another round in his job guarding a feisty former first lady. Nice characters, cutesy story, and a predictable plot.  Enjoyable chemistry between Shirley MacLaine and Nicolas Cage.  Rated PG-13.
