Here is our group
on top of a vent cone. Vent cones typically pop up around volcanos.

You can judge the
age of each island by the amount and height of the vegetation. This is
one of the older islands and was covered with large brush and small scraggly
trees. The lake in the foreground is a collapsed creator. This angle is
misleading. The lake is about eight hundred feet above sea level. Darwin
discovered the lake but was disappointed to find it too saline to drink.
Down in the cove there is a rock ledge with many carved names and dates
including one from around the time of Darwin's visit in 1835.

These are the boats (Zodiacs?) that carried us to the landing sites. We also took several boat trips
around the island shores. It was a good way to get right up to the cliffs
to see blue footed boobies and penguins.

This is a rookery
where the sea lion pups relentlessly pursued the mothers for a meal. The
interaction between mother and pup was fun to watch and sometimes amusingly
familiar.
