3.1 - Of Nightmares and Fairytales

Dear devoted fans:

We return with our bi-monthly update of the Europe Adventure. ;) Yes,
even though it is two months after the fact, our stories continue with our
journey from the gorgeous city of Vienna, Austria, to a quaint little town
called Bobingen in Germany. On one of the trains to our destination we
had the priviledge of using the chief conductor's 'Handy' (what they call
a cell phone in Austria and Germany) to call the Kriegels, the family with
whom we were going to be staying. They are friends of Dana's family who graciously took us into their home, making us feel part of their family, and giving us many sight-seeing suggestions and much help in planning our days.

Appropriately, a very cloudy, cold day with a constant rain fall accompanied us on our solemn visit to the very first concentration camp, (which was also an all-male camp), in Germany - Dachau. We joined the English tour already in progress. For an unknown reason Jewish music ran through Dana's head during most of the visit (probably from 'Schindler's List'). It was unnerving to think that we were walking on ground that was once covered in human blood, bones and teeth. Not a place to visit regularly, that's for sure. Some of Becky's thoughts throughout the visit: How on earth (literally) could mere human beings (for that is what the Nazis and SS guards etc. were) think themselves so worthy as to fearlessly and thoughtlessly torment and torture other's lives just like their own?  All I know is that God says that revenge is His, and the horrors that happened years ago will be dealt with properly.

The Kriegels
The first gorgeous, blue-skyed day was spent at the 'Cinderella Castle', also known as Schloss Neuschwanstein. This castle was surrounded by a fairy tale wonderland of ice blue lakes, mountains covered with pure white snow, tall dark green pines, and villages nestled all around. We trekked up part of a mountain to reach the castle, and the views that met our eyes were phenomenal. The scent of horse manure wafted by as horses passed by pulling wagon-loads of people. Another much familiar sight that met our eyes was a group of  Japanese tourists who were also enjoying the sights.
