The keel internal armature was stacked with steel scrap to increase volume and is sitting on a scale to be weighed. The original design was for fabricated steel casing filled with scrap and lead hence the need to add volume and a spacer.. The keel studs are 2205 Duplex ss. You can see the steel baths in the background ready to melt the lead starting with 2 x 1 ton blocks. The wooden mould encased in cement is buried in front of the baths. |

And the fire is going. Just plain scrap wood did the job in no time - even the large 1 ton chunks.... |

Once all the lead was melted and the swarf removed, a 2 inch pipe swivelling on an union was used to pour the lead into the mould. The armature was heated to avoid prematurely freezing the lead. Unfortunately it had drizzled the night before and the mould was wet, which added wonderful cracking noises and bubbling during the pour. This was despite the careful planning and watching weather forecasts etc. |
