I used Turbocad as a drawing tool and Principles of Yacht Design by Lars Larsson and Rolf E Eliasson to learn the fundamentals of designing yachts.  I am doing this for myself and I don't care about resale value or any other conventions.  There are some strange yachts that have sailed around the world, therefore, whatever I came up with wouldn't be the most outrageous.
As with all designs, one soon learns that every design is a compromise.
Most cruisers spend 90% of the time in port, therefore  priority was given to living aboard comfort as opposed to sailing ability/comfort.  Long periods of anchoring/cruising would also be taken into consideration.
