A Collection of Short Stories

By William M. Balsamo

Introduction

The short stories listed on this website represent a collection of works written over a period of fifteen years. Behind each story there is a truth; a person, an event, a memory recorded from real life. In the passage of time they have been fictionalized and given a life of their own. Is it not strange how fictional characters take on more of a life that the average person who often lives in obscurity and bitter neglect? I dare to say that more people have heard of James Bond than of my neighbor next door.

The millions of people who meet their demise daily are often forgotten in a short time even by those whom they once loved, but characters of fiction can endure for ever.

The stories contained in this collection are not attempts at literature. They are merely reflections on the lives of people I have met and known by chance along my own journey into obscurity. Some stories are meant to be humorous, others a bit more serious but there are still others which I have not yet fully understood myself.

My stories are the children of my mind and,as such, they constantly grow and change on their way to maturity. should you return in a few months you might find them quite different from what they are now. They will have grown. And who knows? There may even be a few new sibblings among them to tell you their own story.

At any rate,I hope you may enjoy my stories for what they are and I welcome your critical response.
