How'd you like to meet this thing in a dark alley? You would?! How cool. This was my Halloween costume & since I archived October, I thought I'd put it here. Thanks to Deerhoof for taking & sending me the pictures. Be sure to visit their website & the link to the Milk Man artist in Toyko. wow! (p.s. Yes, I know I am a super geek.) |
So, I thought about making these pages actually a little more 'blog-ish'. I thought it might be fun to tell you stories behind some of the songs I play - a story about how they affected my life that you don't always get to hear on-air. So, to begin... On my birthday show, I played The Plugz "Hombre Secreto" off the Repo Man Soundtrack, right? Well, that was the first version of the song I had heard. I still don't know who did the original. My mom listened to Elvis & Roger Whittaker. My step-dad listened to Led Zeppelin & Steely Dan. I couldn't really get into either of those things - I grew up on MTV and later, college radio, so I missed out on a lot of classic rock stuff. I am starting to learn more now, but generally, I'm pretty in the dark about it. So, anyway... |
I was working this suck-a$$ job in my hometown. It was food service and I had to get up super early to make below minimum wage and work with some really sexist dudes. But the whole point of this story is that while working that job, these dudes listened to classic rock & when I first heard the real version of Secret Agent Man, I was pretty freaked out. :) And that's my story about The Plugz & their cover of Secret Agent Man. It seems to be a theme in my life that I hear punk covers of songs that I later find out were created by somebody else, and I earn some respect for that band. |
11/23 - Nick Drake: One of These Things First. So, yeah, I seemed to be a little slow during my show today and besides once incorrectly annoucing where the Dirtbombs were playing, realized I had said that we were ending with "...one of my favorite songs off the Garden State Soundtrack". I wanted to clarify & tell you about my introduction to Nick D. "One of these Things First" has been a favorite song of mine for some time now, and is currently featured on the Garden State Soundtrack. I first heard of Nick Drake through Sebadoh's cover of Pink Moon (I think I will have to play something off "Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock" next week now). I remember visiting my boyfriend of the time in North Carolina and he told me more about Nick Drake and played some music from the Pink Moon album for me. My ears and mind were not ready for such music at that time though. I was listening to hard-edged Sebadoh, Husker Du, fuzzy Curve, Red Hot Chili Peppers and god knows what else; and I was young and I LOVED to rock (still do, actually). However, thankfully, like most tastes, my musical taste expanded and I have realized the genius of Nick Drake in the past few years and "One of these Things" is one of my favorites by him. |
HAPPY TURKEY DAY, FOLKS! I WILL BE EATING QUORN ROAST & VISITING MY GRANDPA - THE BEST GUY IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, SO SEE YA NEXT WEEK. |
