Who's Fleecing Who?
Trades Make Moses a Bigger Winner

It was alledged that alcohol played a big part in Friday's trades that forced Moses to give up his top two picks for a quartet of second tier players. He lost Marvin Harrison and Marcus Robinson, but gained:
  • from Wallace: Tyrone Wheatley: scored twice.
  • from Wallace: Albert Connell: now No 1 in Washington with the injury to Michael Westbrook
  • from Deitrich: James Stewart... Number 1 back in Detroit, but still quiet
  • from Deitrich: Terrance Mathis: Number 1 WR in Atlanta
It looks like Bud gave up more, but the guys Wallace gave up showed it on the field, particulary Wheatley.

The trade was not a factor in this weeks games. Wallace won easily. Bud's missing players would not have helped him. Moses won big, very big, scoring a BRFL season high 66 points.

The rest of the finals.

Moses 66 Czupryna 25

In our mind, is was 1991 again.
A week ago, we were ragging on Moses like he was the second coming of Ron Howrigon. He of the ugly 1-13 season. We also were talking up Czupryna. '91 was the year he won it all. What a difference a week makes. Duce Staley eeked out a single bonus point, and Chicago completely flatlined. Only Tampa's D, which shut out Chicago, put up points for CZ.

Aside from the trade, the "original" Moses team put up great numbers. The St Louis D and kicker Jeff Wilkins combined for 21 points. Then on Monday, the combo of Testaverde and Chrbet clicked twice for 25 more points. The final TD rubbed a little salt in the wounds of Czupryna. It cost his beloved Pats the game.

Dahlin-Bethea 33 Jackson 19

CJ box score DB box score
While Moses' big game was a surprise, the Dahlin-Bethea team was expected to do well. They had a solid draft and have a balanced team. They lost in a week 1 shootout and had good match-ups for week 2. Yet they ultimately made a rookie mistake. The SR'ed and started Dallas WR James McKnight, who scored, but forgot to exercise their "right of first refusal" and McKnight became a free agent on Tuesday.

Perhaps Jackson needs to re-think his QB by committee approach. The Bengals had their easiest game, home vs the Browns, and only managed a single TD. It did not go to rookie Peter Warrick. Teams with solid back-ups, perhaps Best and Ricker, might be expecting an offer?

Best 47 Ricker 42

BR box score * BST box score
Two weeks on his second tour, Ricker finds himself left behind as the only 0-2 team. He had a decent week, but Best was better. Highlights: Culpepper/Moss combo clicked once, and TB stole one from TB as Biakabutuka scored on the ground. Jason Elam kicked in 11, but got injured. If there is a silver lining for BR, it is that in another year that he had Elam, Elam also got hurt. It was 1997, Ricker's last championship year.

Best was not sold on reclaiming the Carolina QBs after they led him to the title last year. However, he snatched up Muhsin Muhammad in the 4th and Beuerlein was still sitting there in the fifth. It looks like business as usual for Carolina as they racked up 3 against the woeful 49'ers. As part as his insurance policy, Best also took a backup QB, early as it turns out. Tony Banks and Baltimore scored 32 points this week. Not bad insurance.

Barry 49 Jones-Klingman 41

AB box score * JK box score
As the scores trickled in Sunday, BRFL'ers wondered "who has Jimmy Smith and is it my opponent?". The only folks who had anything to fear over Smith's incredible 23 point game were Jones and Klingman. It was the second week in a row that a reciever turned in an eye-popping game for Barry. In week 1 it was Az Hakim. Barry is 2-0 and has yet to get more than a single TD in a game from the highly touted Washington QBs, his top pick.

JK benched Favre, their top pick, and SR'ed Arizona QBs,(but they didn't keep them). They might be worth a look with two TDs in week 2. Neither QB scored enough to make a difference vs AB. There are encouraging signs of life on the bench: New acquired Ike Hilliard scored as did Shannon Sharpe, now playing for Baltimore.

Wallace 57 Outlaw 36

WAL box score * OUT box score
Despite the big win, Wallace pines for the one he gave away. Tyrone Wheatley scored twice for Moses. Wally may be selling Oakland short. He attempted to SR Arizona QBs, but was told that JK had them this week, so he stuck with Oakland. Gannon ran in three. (Notice the trend this year). Wallace did get two scores from Antonio Freeman and "The Edge" Wheatley and his two scores aside, Wallace could have looked down his bench for more points. Starting WRs Marcus Robinson and Charles Johnson were shut out, but four other players on the bench scored: Fred Beasley, Derrick Alexander, Kevin Dyson and Travis Taylor (Moses' throw in) who scored twice.

Outlaw took off for a long vacation in Greece and posted three weeks worth of line-ups on the web. This weeks only managed 36, but was highlighted by the best game by a kicker in three years as Mike Hollis scored 21. Joe Horn was a late round find with 14 points on the pine.

Stroupe 52 Deitrich 45

BUD box score * STP box score
Bud's trade with Moses didn't seem to hurt him in week 2. It helped him a little as Marvin Harrison took a little of Stroupe's Indy action. He could have helped himself to a win if he had put one of his recent pick-ups in the starting lineup. Mike Anderson, (probably another draft board write in), filled in for Terrell Davis and Olandis Gary in Denver and scored 16. Bud did get some Denver action as Rod Smith scored twice. Smith as you recall was in bad slump last season was cut by Stroupe and picked up by Bud and was productive in the BRFL playoffs.

Stroupe got a good game from Peyton Manning and a score from Mike Alstott. He correctly guessed that Tiki Barber was not a one week wonder (a two week wonder maybe) and got 8 points from his recent claim. Perhaps Barber's points came at the expense of Ricky Watters who scored 14, but was left on the pine.

Teams Not Afraid to Trade

Week 2 in the BRFL players and teams are restless. Adding players, Special Reserve "Investments", and even a trade! The first since week 12, 1998. Jackson's traditional week 1 fleecing of a rookie?

Yes, it does involve Jackson. But, it doesn't involve a new team. It involves a very OLD team, JK. JK acquires Bill Schroeder (for a Green Bay combo), and old favorite Ike Hilliard. Jackson gets Shawn Jefferson. If his numbers from week 1 hold steady through out the season, this could be the biggest bargain involving a Jefferson since the Louisiana Purchase.

The prognosticator was 3-2-1 last week. Damn Faulk!

Deitrich vs Stroupe

Look for Bud to establish himself early with a win over Stroupe to go to 2-0. Stroupe is usually a slow starter. Bud's "no-name" backs have been performing well, but one name that is familiar to Stroupe is James Stewart...one of the few Tennessee alumni not taken by him.

Wallace vs Outlaw

In their first 9 1/2 years together in the league, Wallace and Outlaw never played more than once a year. Now Outlaw is facing him for the fourth time in seven games. The three games played in late 1999 were high scoring. This one should be as well...for Outlaw. He really looks good this year and should make Wally 0-2 for the first time since '93.

Barry vs Jones-Klingman

Thanks to Az Hakim, Barry was off and rolling in week 1. Hakim is one of those type of players that have a monster game and then disappears for six weeks. Dorsey Levins is knicked. Jerome Bettis is off (like you'd notice... if Bettis owners campaign for a lowering of the bonus points next year it would be for five yards instead of 50). Barry has little to offer in week 2.

JK on the other hand is also underwhelming, although Marshall Faulk could all himself again. These two played to a 16-12 snoozer in week 2 last season with JK winning. Expect the same result.

Ricker vs Best

Best should do better than the anemic 27 he managed against JK last week. Carolina is playing SF, which if last years number's hold, it could mean a four TD game for Beuerlein. Best WR trio of Carter, Muhammad and Rice managed a single bonus point last week. They are due.

Ricker's Vikes are at home, but face a tough Miami D. Plus Best has Cris Carter. Ricker should go to 0-2.

Moses vs Czupryna

You have to go back to CZ's dynasty years of 91-92 for the last time he started 2-0. He should do it without any trouble. For a season Moses' backs will probably never equal the 267 yards Duce Staley put up last week. Is it too early to start comparing Moses to '91 Howrigon or '95 Barry as the worst starting teams of all time? Both those teams started their BRFL careers 0-10 and then beat JK in week 11. The good news for Moses is that he gets JK in week4.

Jackson vs Dahlin-Bethea

Calvin has made an investment in Atlanta in claiming their QBs and trading for Jefferson. Don't forget Jamal Anderson and Tim Dwight. They don't play SF every week, though. He also has Cin QB/ Peter Warrick...might he unleash them this week? No better time...They have Cleveland at home.

CZ's teeth may have been in a glass and him sound asleep when the Db's rallied to close the gap to 53-45 on Monday night. If he didn't notice, the rest of the league did. These are no rookie pushovers. Expect them to serve Calvin notice that he won't be walking away with the West.
