DB's Tie Game Scoring Record>

Hammer BUD 90-39

The issue of who was the better kicker to have Gary Anderson or Ryan Longwell was settled Monday night. A couple weeks ago, Dahlin-Bethea cut Ryan Longwell after one week in favor of Gary Anderson. This after Longwell scored 19 points. Anderson scored 12 points this week, and the DBs tied the record for the highest BRFL game of all time 90 points by Barry set four years ago this week. Had they kept Longwell, they would have scored 89 points this week.

There is no disputing other personnel moves of the DBs. And they make a lot of them. Their shrewd pick up of Travis Prentice paid. The rookie scored three times, and netted 20 points. Denver QBs tossed three, two to Ed McCaffery. Eddie George, Terry Glenn and the Miami D also scored.

For Bud, he has had two back to back weeks where his opponents have scored 158 points. Not a record says Wallace, who remembers back to back 80 point games by his opponents Outlaw and Jackson. Not even having Kurt Warner not on his bye week could have helped Bud overcome the 51 point whipping.

More Monday Comebacks

Two big trends in 2000, Monday night comebacks and high losing scores.

Best 51 Stroupe 44

The Monday night magic is over for Stroupe. After two comeback victories, Stroupe had a situation he could not deal with...a lead. He led Best 44-40 and needed something from Mike Alstott. Alstott was stuffed a couple time inside the five and overthrew a sure TD pass late. Meanwhile Best used Martin Gramatica's 11 points overtake Stroupe. Best is a bit of a thorn in Stroupe's side on Monday's: Recalling the infamous "Garbage Time" win of Best in 98, when Best's QBs scored twice in the last three minutes.

On Sunday it was nip and tuck, Best grabbed the early lead with TDs from Stephen Davis, Johnnie Morton and the Detroit D (Special Reserve this week). Meanwhile Stroupe's Indy juggernagt was held to 16 points. In the late game, Best picked up two early TDs from Carolina QBs, but Stroupe caught up with two scores from Frank Sanders and one score from Charlie Garner. The loss ends a four game win streak by Stroupe, but he still leads the East division by virtue of a tie-breaker over Wallace.

Ricker 57 Outlaw 54

Duante Culpepper's 4th Quarter pass to Randy Moss allowed Ricker to overcome a stunned Outlaw. The 12 pointer combined with two other scores from Culpepper allowed Ricker to erase a 23 point deficit. Ricker must not be noted for his defense. He's given an average of 58 points in the last two weeks, both wins.

Outlaw gets another 4TD game from SF QBs, two scores from Joe Horn and a score from the almost forgotten Fred Taylor. It is almost becoming hazardous to have your QB do well. Bud lost with 5 TDs from St Louis last week in addition to Outlaws bad luck with SF this week.

Wallace 60 Czupryna 37

The versatile Rich Gannon scored in the following ways:

  • TD pass (2)
  • TD run
  • Two point conversion run
  • Passing bonus point
  • Rushing Bonus Point
and Wallace crushed CZ 60-37. Wallace has won three straight and has scored in the 60's two straight weeks.

CZ'a is back to playing favorites. He's put the Bears in hibernation and is starting New England. The result was three more TDs. CZ has lost 5 straight.

Barry 35 Moses 27

Although it is an even numbered week, we saw "Grandma" Moses anyway, breaking Moses' pattern of losing the odd weeks and winning big on the even weeks. Moses is 2-4.

With Stroupe's loss, 5-1 AB owns the league's best record. He continues his pattern of flat QB play and a standout game by a receiver. This week it was a less showy Terrell Owens with two TDs.

Jones-Klingman 35 Jackson 13

And at last, JK has won!!! Jackson was the hapless victim. 35-13. Brett Favre alone outscored hapless CJ who intended to start a QB that he SR'ed. Problem was the QB, Atlanta, was dropped by someone this week and could not be SR'ed. Not like Jackson wasn;t aware of the move. It was HE who dropped Atlanta. Jackson falls to 2-4.

After losing back to back weeks averaging 55.5 points, 1-4-1 JK scores 20 points less and wins. The win completes a sweep for the Central teams this week.

Week 6 Preview

What can I say about the last two weeks. Scoring 55, 56, 56 and 63 points isn't enough to win your game. That's insane! I do expect sanity to return this week, however. The reason is the Rams are off. No Warner, Faulk, Bruce, Holt, Hakim, Wilkins. Let's enjoy some good old fashioned slugfests.

A mediocre 3-3 last week to bring my season total to 17-12-1.

Deitrich (3-2) vs Dahlin-Bethea (3-2)

And now the winner of the BRFL's luckiest team: Dahlin-Bethea . Not that the rook pair has pulled some out of the hindquarters, but because this is the team that gets to play Bud the week that Kurt Warner goes back to stocking shelves in Iowa for a little R&R. The bye effects the DBs as well, as they are short Issac Bruce, James McKnight and Sylvester Morris. However, Bud without St Louis is rather ordinary. That's about 20 points lopped off of Bud's BRFL record 58 point a game pace. Last week St Louis feasted on San Diego, the same team Denver gets use to regains it's chops this week. A couple weeks Bud claimed Arizona (they host Cleveland). However the Brownies aren't as bad as you think: they have not given up a TD through the air in 15 quarters.

Wallace (3-2) vs Czupryna (1-4) -

Wally beat Jones twice this week. First he and Derrick Alexander pulled one out over them Monday night. Then perhaps while JK slept in Tuesday, he claimed Shaun Alexander. A JK castoff they should have been the designated "flavor of the week". If S. Alexander's Monday numbers are a preview of the rest of the year, Wallace finally has that back to compliment Edgerrin James. He traded Tyrone Wheatley to Moses, and Corey Dillon plays for a team that can't score.

The old man woke up early Tuesday and claimed another flavor of the week: Brian Mitchell. Mitchell scored on two long TDs, but most importantly, he's the replacement for Duce Staley. Staley, like CZ, hasn't shown up since week 1, but perhaps Mitchell can be the spark. Beats starting Priest Holmes every week.

Wallace aka "Alexander's Ragtime Band" should have no trouble marching over another of the BRFL's cellar dwellers.

Stroupe (4-1) vs Best (2-2-1)

Stroupe, the Master of Monday, has been the story of the year so far. Two straight weeks, two straight Monday comebacks. He'll get another chance this week. He has Mike Alstott going. His opponent, Best, has known Monday heartbreak this year. He could also be 4-1 if a little better Monday luck. Perhaps this is the week Best makes a QB change. The Panthers appear to be in turmoil. The Ravens on the other hand return to play the team that allowed them to toss 5 in week 2. The only time we've seen Cris Carter this year is on the United Way football schedule.

Stroupe - the only BRFL team to miss the playoffs two straight years- is off to a torrid start. That should continue this week with his fifth straight win.

Outlaw (3-2) vs Ricker (2-3)

Ricker had a breakout week last week with epic 68-63 win over Bud. Did he use it all up? His Vike combo is facing Tampa this week. That could keep things in check. Outlaw has put together two solid weeks with wins outside the division. Last week he plucked 21 off the waiver wire to fill holes in his bye-ravaged team. I expect Outlaw to continue to rack up points behind San Francisco, that surprising offensive juggernagt.

Barry (4-1) vs Moses (2-3)

I snuck a peak at the "Prince of Egypt's" lineup this week, they only advice I can give him is "remember the Titans" are playing the Bengals. He's starting the Jets at QB. Last week was an odd numbered week, so I picked Moses correctly to lose, although it didn't happen until KC made a pick with 17 ticks left Monday night.

AB has been making hay with a couple recycled fantasy busts: Jerome Bettis and Robert Smith have been averaging a TD and half over the last 3 games. The backs aren't even his strong suit. Terrell Owens is back from suspension this week and Jimmy Smith again plays the Ravens who he torched for 23 points in week 2.

The only thing consistent about Moses is that every week I pick him to lose. Barry.

Jones-Klingman (0-4-1) vs Jackson (2-3)

The best thing Jackson has going for him is that he plays in a division with CZ and Moses. He almost earns second by default. In the two years under our current playoff format there has always been an awful team that backs in. Usually that is JK, It's probably going to be Calvin this year. Perhaps because of this situation, Calvin hasn't panicked yet. Usually if he starts badly, he's team is almost unrecognizable from the one he drafted.

That last time I remember someone in the league having a worse two game stretch was '91 when Wallace lost back to back games scoring 40 and 44 points. His opponents scored 80. JK has scored 111 points 56 and 55 in back to back weeks and LOST. It's hard to work up any enthusiasm for either team. Both Jackson's top flight backs are knicked up. JK's all BRFL back, Marshall Faulk, is on a bye. Favre is at Detroit, a tough place for him. Jackson has slightly favorable matchups for his QBs, NYG and TB.

Heads Jackson, Tails JK. Toss the coin. It's Heads. Oh wait, Calvin, take the coin. Apply it toward your unpaid bill.
