Tobacco was introduced to Europe
from the New World at the end of the fifteenth century. Smoking spread rapidly and
was long regarded as having medicinal value. It was not until the 20th century,
however, that smoking became a mass habit and not until after the Second World War that
the dangers of smoking were firmly established.
About
12.1 million adults in the UK smoke cigarettes - 29% of men and 28% of women.
In 1972, 52% of men and 41% of women smoked cigarettes - nearly half the population
of the UK. Now less than one-third smokes, but the decline in recent years has been
heavily concentrated in older age groups: i.e., almost as many young people are taking up
smoking but more established smokers are quitting.
In Great Britain about 450
children start smoking every day.
Every year, around 120,000 smokers in the UK die as a result of their habit.
An estimate for 1990 was as high as 138,000 deaths in the UK.
Smoking causes around 82% of all deaths from lung
cancer, around 83% of all deaths from bronchitis and emphysema and around 25% of all
deaths from heart disease.
Less than 10% of lung cancer patients survive five years after diagnosis.
Smokers who smoke between 1 and 14 cigarettes a day have eight times the
risk of dying from lung cancer compared to non-smokers. Smokers who smoke more than 25
cigarettes a day have 25 times this risk compared to non-smokers.
About 90% of cases of peripheral vascular disease which lead to
amputation of one or both legs are caused by smoking - about 2000 amputations a year.
Tobacco manufacturers are adding sweeteners and flavorings to
cigarettes sold in Ireland in order to make them more attractive to children and
adolescents

Attitudes on
smoking
1. 60% of the
population do not smoke
2. 77% of people (smokers and non-smokers) support a ban on cigarette advertising.
3. Smokers have been a minority in the population since 1976.
4. Over 80% of smokers agree that smoking a bad for their health.
5. Approximately 70% agree their smoking might cause symptoms in their children.
