about: captain beefheart and his magic band, the residents, frank zappa and
lots of (m)others, well, sometimes, that is...
* millionaire: body experience revue
(2001, cd5", bel, piasb 042 cd - 941.0042.122)
millionaire = tim vanhamel. tim's first band was called sister poopoo.
later he joined mauro pawlowski's evil superstars to record "love is ok" and
"boogie children r-us". and as if that wasn't enough, he joined deus
shortly thereafter to tour with them (the ideal crash tour).
and now, tim has formed his own band. together with collegue / former evil
superstar dave schroyen on drums; ben wijers on guitar; bas remans on bass
and aldo struyf on samples and synths, millionaire was a fact.
the band's first single was called "body experience revue", the album:
* millionaire: outside the simian flock (1)
(2001, cd, bel, piasb 061 cd - 941.0061.020)
and it's great !! a very fine collection of funny, poppy melodies including
twisted voices and some groovy guitar work.
mao magazine (belgian's last independent news organ) published a little
interview-booklet (cd-format) that is added to the album in a couple of
record shops - worth your while, if you speak dutch.
* behind the mirror & jimmy carl black: the secrets of crater 6
(2000, cdr, ger, private release)
this third release by german duo behind the mirror, once again features
jimmy carl black. it's a limited release on cdr, signed by the artists.
the music is best described by repeating what the sleeve says: "the crater 6
project is inspired by the landscape of southwest usa, trashy sci-fi movies,
ufo reports, frank zappa and captain beefheart." with georg stock on detuned
guitar.
in an attempt to define, plunderphonic means "taking various, existing
pieces of music, stripping them down to certain instruments or voices ,
speeding them up or slowing them down and putting them together again in a
combination that gives a 'new' composition."
* john oswald: plunderphonic
(1989, cdr, can, -) - incl. 'replica'
john oswald is mister plunderphonic. his 1989 (?) release "plunderphonic"
was immediately confiscated by the authorities because it had michael
jackson nude on the cover (showing that michael jackson is a woman).
certain copies did survive, and, of course, digital copies are circulating.
i wanted to hear this because it has a track called 'replica' on it.
needless to say that this is (a) plunderphic beefheart track(s).
the actual track consists of an intro, called 'cuss', followed by the
actual'replica'. 'cuss' was built up from a don van vliet spoken word track
from trout mask replica. 'replica' is produced out of various "lick my
decals off baby" tracks.
* john oswald: plunderphonic
(1994, cd-pro, uk, blast first discx001cd) - incl. don van vliet:
'replica'
in 1994, the british blast first label issued a mini cd (not for sale) as
some sort of x-mas card. this disc also included don van vliet's 'replica'.
* john oswald: plunderphonic 069/96
(2000, 2cd, ??, sealand 515)
last year, sealand released an excellent double album called "69/96",
including various works by john oswald from the last ten years or so.
remember sealand? they're the ones who also did a fabulous rudy schwarz
project album. anyway, oswald's latest album includes 'cuss', credited to
enid van volt (= don van vliet) and 'rose', credited to big dan mac (magic
band). 'rose' is from the same session (with henry kaiser) as 'replica'
(see above)
* henry kaiser: here's to you, zoogz
(1999, cdr, usa, private release) - incl. various van vliet compositions
making a nice addition to john oswald's plunderphonic beefheart excursions,
is henry kaiser's "here's to you, zoogz". a (very) limited cdr to support
zoogz rift who was (and still is) quite ill. featuring kaiser, john french,
scott colby and others. it also included 'japan in a dishpan' and 'the i'm
so glad variations' (van vliet) but also the above mentioned 'rose', the
oswald/kaiser plunderphonic tune.
* and while we're on the subject: zoogz rift's latest album is called
"born in the wrong universe". it features arthur barrow, john trubee, joe
newman (= the man behind the rudy schwartz project) and my pal danny mathys.
small world.
that's all for now, talk again to you soon,
