a mona lisa
"All I want to say, is everything’s alright and I’m okay"

When I first saw the lyrics to this song, I immediately assumed that this would be a slow song, nice, simple and acoustic along the lines of Goodnight Elisabeth or something. Maybe it was the title or the words themselves but they struck me as gentle.

Imagine my surprise when it turned out to sound more along the lines of Rain King or Einstein. I wasn’t disappointed…it’s a cool song, not their best, but cool anyway, they could use more "fast" songs anyway in their repertoire.

Now, about the song itself. Pretty simple lyrics, with a not so deep message. It’s all about neglect I guess, or taking things for granted. Everyone knows what the Mona Lisa is right? The famous lady with an eternal smile plastered on her face. Well, we all know people like that right? People who always have a cheery disposition, always happy and smiling. More often not, it’s these people we tend to take for granted since it’s easy to assume that they have no worries in life.

Well, sometimes, that "smile" is all they’ve got, and it’s what they use to hide their problems. The main "lyric" in the song is the one I mentioned above, and so in this song itself, it’s not that bad yet. I see "mona lisa" as a symbolism of that, a neglected friend. But at least in the song, she’s "still okay" although life’s rather dull, and everyone treats her the same way and sees her in the same way, things are still okay….for now. Let this song be a friendly reminder to us all…we do neglect our friends sometimes, just watch out for them now and then.
