the
greening of america
My first impression upon hearing of this song was that the Crows had become an "environmental" band. Not that that's a bad thing but well, that's what struck me about the title. I also envisioned a fast rocking song, not the simple piano driven song that it turned out to be. But this is definitely different, a solo piano song that's not depressing, but rather (sorry, can't find a better word for it) cute. This was a surprise for me cuz I for one didn't expect something like this to come out of Adam's songwriting. The words for me seem to go around in circles but the re-occuring idea I keep getting is how "easily things can get better with just a little positivity in one's life". I'm sure we all know that most of the Crow's songs tend to hover around loneliness, depression and basically feeling crappy. Most critics would write it off as simply mope music or something. But what most people fail to recognize is that like most song-writers/artists, what we/they do is a form of healing, a way of expression to go on with life. Yeah Adam writes about relationships that don't work out, about fears and dislikes, but he also sings of hope. This song is one of them. I don't know where he got the term "greening of America" but it strikes me as one big recouperative process, it's a sybolism for a major healing of self, of coming to terms with one's life. The most crucial line of the song for me; "the greening of america's progressing nicely cuz she's choosing me". One of the few songs in their catalogue where Adam is the "winner". This song shows that as easy as it is to fall deeper into dispair, if you recognize the little positive things in your life, things tend to work out for themselves in their own time. It doesn't have to be "a girl" or the same situation as in the song, it's just nice to reflect on the message. Everything can work out in the end, if you let it.
