raining in baltimore
"I really really really really need a raincoat"

I was so glad that this song was included on the cd. When August and Everything After came to my attention, this song was immediately a favorite of mine. Typically, slow songs have always been a passion of mine; sad songs and mournful words. This song fit the bill.

Not only does the song lament loneliness and the pains of broken hearts and wistful dreams, it showcases something we see too rarely: Adam's piano playing. He plays with a style that gives each song additional life. Consider the opening of "A Long December" or the sad strains of "Chelsea."

"It's raining in Baltimore, baby, and everything else is the same; there's things I remember.. things I forget; I miss you -- I guess that I should.. three thousand five hundred miles away: what would you change if you could?" In this smattering of imagery, Adam brings to light the feelings encountered when the one you love simply walks away. Hard to miss someone when you know they don't want you; but then you think of all the beautiful memories and realize you're willing to forgive and forget if only they'll come back. As he said in "Angels of the Silences": "..all my sins, I said that I would pay for them if I could come back to you.." The insistence of the many 'reallys' that close down the song give life to the sorrow in the "I need a raincoat" line. I've got a raincoat; anyone need one?
