i'm not sleeping
"spent my nights in self defense, crying about my innocence"

I've heard rumors about this song; it's about the memory of a lost love, as are a number of Adam's songs. This song came to light after a particularly well-known relationship; thus the rumors that the song was written about Adam's former flame, Jennifer Aniston [who is currently dating Tate Donovan]. I don't believe this is true, personally. The line that says "I see her in the movies, I see her on the TV.." was what originally led people to speculate this. Figures. The song captures the dreams of a sleeping man, how they revolve around a seemingly perfect woman, a wonderful love that is appealing in every way; and then the awakening comes and he's left alone in the morning again, however early it may be.

Recurring theme in Adam's songs: loneliness, depression, longing, pain, heartbreak, relationship breakdowns, low esteem. I heard an interview with Duritz once in which he said that he finds it difficult to believe that there's anyone in this world that really cares that he exists.

That sentiment is reflected in his music; and the utter familiarity of the subjects draws many people to claim the songs as their own, feeling that they fit them perfectly. And in this Adam has gained the love and the care that he can't see; in his words people find the ability to relate, and that's as close as you can get to being loved sometimes. Whoa; I diverted there. On to the next song.
