Edythe Silverthorn tells of her Grampa James Minard: Grampa
Minard suffered with Gangreen for an unheard of 10 years from a
wood cutting exercise where he chopped off the toes on one of
his feet. When he was "retired", aunt Lottie gave him a room,
Myrtle (Edythe's mother) would come and cook and Uncle Richard
would give him spending money. This was retirement back then.
[75]
James died of Cerebral Hemorrage (16days), senility listed as
contributory.
[77]
In 1920 James was a widower. He lived as a lodger, at the age
of 68, at the home of William and Angelina Dempsey and their
four children (Dorothy, Albert, Mildred and Elmer) who were
aged 14, 12, 8 & 5 respectively.
[1355]
Marriage record #201, dated 31 Oct 1889 of James Minard,
quarryman age 37, and Mary Jane Temple, age 31, both giving
birthplace of Canada.
Marraige date given as 5 Nov 1889 in Grindstone City, official
being David McFaun, Minister and apparent witness. (It is
assumed that this was a clerical error).
Marriage witnesses were Joseph and Martha TEMPLE, Grindstone
City, brother and sister in law to Mary. Marriage as
ministered by David McFaun, in Grindstone City. Hames and Mary
were 37 and 31 respectively. (MR#2-30-1889)
James parents were also listed on the record, recorded as Adam
MINARD and Sarah RILEY. Mary Jane's father listed as Joseph
TEMPLE.
(note: the father recorded is in error. Joseph was Mary Janes
brother and apparent witness. It is assumed that this was a
clerical error.)
[1357]
Part of the confusion on James Minard's lineage is that
different records, particularily the census, show his father as
being from either Pennsylvania or New York. The 1900 census,
for example, lists his father as being born in Pennsylvania,
Mother born Ireland. This particular record further states
that his father Immigrated to US in 1855, naturalized PA.
