In the late 1800's and early 1900's at Grindstone City,
everyone attended the Ladies Aid Meeting - Women worked on
quilts and different needed articles - Ladies prepared supper
and invited the men to eat. Myrtle, as a young girl, helped
with the meals. (story told by Myrtle to Bernice Wood)

His grandson, William Darrell Silverthorn, remembers his
grandparents for Methodist Sunday school in the summers when he
stayed with them in Harbor Beach. Other summer memories
William recalls Grampa bringing him "Bit-O-Honey" candybars on
his way home from working at the factory, singing "Amazing
Grace" every Sunday at the local Methodist church, Gramma's
fantastic meals, short stature and her rocking in her favorite
chair when she had a spare moment, eating raw string beans from
the garden out back, playing in the basement and remembering
how dark the upstairs bedrooms were he swears he "saw a ghost",
and the hundreds of salt and pepper shakers that lined the
staircase.
